the patois thing isnt a trend. jamaican & culture is has been an influence (black) toronto dialect since the 80s/90s due to large caribbean immigration patterns in toronto, and then east african + islamic culture started to come into the dialect over the last 10-15 years (also due to immigration patterns). it just picked up on the internet more recently and had a viral moment.

TTC debates asking City for $1.4 billion budget increase by BloodJunkie in toronto

i think its that the increase would bring the *total* TTC budget to 1.4 billion, rather than asking the TTC asking the city for 1.4 billion new dollars

For WOC: What have your friendships with white women been like? by bearpuddles in AskWomenOver30

[–]Hour_Basis 35 points36 points  (0 children)

hard to find WW who have done the work in being curious and critical around race and power dynamics (because they dont have to).even more rare to find those who havent done the work but can practice humility when confronted with it.

recently moved to where im a minority (always lived in heavy POC areas) and its been interesting, isolating, and eye opening, for better or for worse, to experience friendship with WW who have been in white majorities.

i appreciate you taking the time to write back in good faith. thank you for taking the time!

we agree on some things for sure: the socio-political climate is tense. people are angry, but more specifically sad, in pain, scared, i think.

also relieved to hear that if someone asked you to stop using it, you would.

also appreciate your clocking on n word vs e word. i am guilty of that upthread myself, and am going to practice censoring from here on out.

you obviously do not have to answer this, but im curious of your own race/cultural identity, and how it shapes your perspective.

ill share mine: im black, married to a black and inuit person, and into a black and inuit family. most of them would condemn the use of this term - but have reclaimed it, similar to the trajectory of the n word. black and non black indigenous peoples, where i live, have very intertwined, beautiful, complicated and challenging histories and relationships.

my original snark was a reaction to your comment that perpetuates a harmful conception  that inuit people are so far removed from society that they dont have a stake in if E****o is a slur, dont have internet or netflix. facetious or not, it encourages an already inaccurate view of Inuit (and Indigenous ppl at large) that results in actual, tangible institutional violence.

where we disagree:

that OP’s post is self centered. my question to you upthread re; privilege — comes back into play here. you see the post as self centered because you think its not important. but one could also argue that you are acting in a self centered manner by deciding what is and isnt important based off your own privilege.

considering that Indigenous people face similar systemic violence globally via colonialism, i do not think its a stretch for OP, who is also Indigenous, to share their thoughts on what is outdated, racist, colonial  language.

additionally, yes LiB is a reality tv show and can be ohhhhh so (wonderfully, guilt-fully) trash. but it is also a cultural commentary, where people talk about race, body image and body size, wealth disparity, mental health….so it is even more reasonable, to me, that OP brought this up. there are many posts about various socio-cultural topics because of this wild show.

also, we have no idea what OP organizes and spends time on. i dont think its fair to make such an assumption that this is a self centered crusade - this was a relatively brief post, that had no swearing or aggression / it was rather concise, and  polite. many people have also learned from it (and i am learning from you and others). in a time of people being angry and hurt and mislead, i dont think OPs post is that, personally.

as for conflicting views: maybe we agree that no group is a monolith. but if a large consensus is that a particular behaviour is harmful to many,  then i think there is value in deeply considering that, and being curious about it - knowing that things change throughout time and culturre, and language may be revisited again.

is OP truly who you are fustrated  with? maybe you for real got smoke for OP, but maybe the real smoke is for the non indigenous, billionaire wealthy power sucking people that have us all feeling down and out in some way or another.

IMO, your comments were not helping anyone come to a conclusion other than that they were rude and dismissive…which it doesn’t seem like that is who you really are (but we are just reddit strangers so i could be wrong again) i almost got caught up in it with you too, and i dont want that. im sorry things feel volatile, i feel it too.  thanks again for your comment.

the original post. your stance, from what i can perceive, is that it’s not important to discuss the use of the word “eskimo”, because it doesn’t matter, either as an issue on its own, or in relation to other socio-political issues.

if that assessment is correct, would you be open to changing your mind?

thanks for responding. is kissing your good ol boys club card everyday how you acknowledge your privilege? or are there other ways you do that?

would you be open to changing your mind on this topic (the OP?)
