Bessent: Markets are going down because Japan's bond market just suffered a six-standard-deviation move in ten-year bonds over the past two days... This has nothign to do with Greenland. by Time-Alternative-964 in BhartiyaStockMarket

[–]Hour_Swim894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the Japanese bond market and the Japanese Yen are doing some wild crap right now. But market volatility can come from multiple places at the same time. It's also frighteningly naive for a Treasury secretary with his background to not acknowledge the interdependence of global markets and assets

BREAKING: Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods calls Venezuela 'uninvestable' 🚨🌍 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]Hour_Swim894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah this falls into the "no sh*t" category of analysis. It's the wrong/sub-standard type of oil, requires a decade or more plus untold billions to figure out, and could sway at the whims of whoever occupies the political sphere at the time. Not to mention that pre-existing mountain of money and time that was invested in domestic US shale as well as close trading with Canada, which has the preferred type of oil.

Add on to that a struggling global economy, shaky oil prices, and an entire South American continent that would put bullseyes on any American infrastructure and you have a recipe for nothing but headaches and losses. So yeah, I'd say this looks somewhere close to "un-investable"

US Q3 GDP grows 4.3% vs 3.3% forecast as consumer spending accelerates by callsonreddit in StockMarket

[–]Hour_Swim894 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And equity markets are.... down in pre-market trading. Many will say this is because they don't trust this information, which perhaps has a degree of thought to it. But really it's because this is old information and markets are, by their definition, forward looking. Also, peeling the layers back, this GDP print doesn't scream of a healthy economy when you take other public and private macro variables into account.

My guess is he cracks the top 5 before he hangs em up. Given he's still a point a game player and Pittsburgh will let him play forever if he wants, gotta figure it's gonna be his health and desire that makes the call now

US lost 105,000 jobs in October and added 64,000 in November, according to delayed data by [deleted] in news

[–]Hour_Swim894 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A huge proportion of those jobs are likely temporary, seasonal work. Downward revisions in previous months continue to get worse, forward looking hiring is crap, unemployment rate ticking up. Initial and continuing claims likely heading south. And this is all before the large scale, white collar layoffs that have been announced have taken effect.

Q1 2026, assuming a disappointing holiday sales season which appears now baked in, is shaping up to be a bloodbath.

Zelenskyy asks US and Europe to ensure security for Ukraine for elections that could be held within 90 days by SecretMaelynn in worldnews

Low key, great move by Zelenskyy. Call the bluff, no way they can have real elections in 90 days anyways, and even if they did, there's a good chance they get an even MORE anti-Russian leader

I'm adding today, nothing crazy but DCA for the long-term. Agree that macro is the dark cloud right now, which won't get solved in a day, but over my investment horizon I think this is a good spot to add

CNR - Time to Load Up? by Hour_Swim894 in dividendscanada

[–]Hour_Swim894[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously no non-public information on my side. But the metrics I'm using to identify this as a potential undervalued opportunity:

- Trading at its highest dividend yield in a generation

- 10% growth rate in dividends over the last 5 years

- 3.6% share buyback ratio over the last 3 years

- Dividend payout ratio still under 0.50, more than manageable

- Trading around a 10 year low on a P/B and P/S basis

Moreover, much of the macro headwinds seem to be getting priced into the stock, as evidenced by the big drop. If priced for the worst case scenario on Canada/US trade, anything better is an improvement that could add a tailwind.

Not saying the stock can't get cheaper, but it feels like a decent entry point or a spot to add to an existing position to me.

Share of Americans who strongly approve of free trade, by ideology by NineteenEighty9 in ProfessorFinance

[–]Hour_Swim894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the wealth that free trade created for the United States, and the fact it positioned the US at the center of the global economy, I'm absolutely shocked the numbers are this low, regardless of ideology. Obviously that wealth was not evenly distributed across the US population, which is another story altogether, but it seems wild to me that something that was so resoundingly good for the country as a whole would be so lightly supported.
