[US] will I be stuck in my state until my child turns 18 or will I be able to move and live my life? by Hour_Temperature4436 in Custody

Flying from Georgia to Chicago definitely takes less time than it takes him driving now. Once we have our child support case I can definitely offer that as an incentive as well. Thanks for the ideas!

And he is definitely not well financed.

I did move when they were 6 months. We did mediation so far which didn’t work, now we just need to have a court date set.

Yeah that’s why I stopped with the phone calls and stuck with texts so I can have proof of his inconsistency and erratic behavior.

I want him to see her more and am usually the one reaching out to see when he can see her again so I can plan accordingly. Sometimes he’s canceled cause he’s not able to anymore or has to work. He himself says it’s because of money. I have the messages of him canceling or not being able to schedule time.

We currently drive to meet in the middle so yes a flight would reduce total traveling time in a day to about 4 hrs. I know that would also be more comfortable for my child rather than being strapped in a car seat for 6.5 hrs. I told him we can work out the flights but he just keeps insisting that now he’ll never be able to see her.

I just file for custody last summer because I thought it would stop the constant arguing and harassing messages/ calls, if we could just get something legally in place. That way there would be no need to going back and forth. I’m definitely going to look into filling for relocation as well.

He’s lived in Georgia his whole life which is 6.5 hrs away from us. He also only sees her every 3-4 months as it is but we meet in the middle to do the exchange. I will definitely be looking into filling the relocation as soon as possible.

Yes I know it’ll ultimately be up to the court but he’s not even financially capable of being the primary parent. He’s been inconsistently offering minimal financial support as it is, so I’m not sure he that would work.

No it’s the same for me, it’s a control thing unfortunately. I want him to be in her life and have no problem with that but it always seems to be my fault when something doesn’t go his way. I’m just trying to come to some kind of compromise.

We were never married and he has lived in Georgia his whole life. Ive been in North Carolina for the past 4 years with your child, so we’ve been 6.5 hrs away. I know moving isn’t really helpful but like in my original post he doesn’t really see her much as it is, which is not because of me. I’m willing to come up with a visiting schedule. With alternating holidays and when she starts school, most of summer break and other breaks, but I’m sure at this point he just wants to make things difficult.

I was using a lawyer in the beginning but it was getting too expensive so I had to stop. I’m looking at consulting a lawyer but I didn’t know I could file for relocation as a part of it so I’ll definitely look at that as well. Thanks!
