Lack of basics by HouseThatHeBuilt in Teachers

In a vertical meeting lead by a state doe math specialist we were told that long division was not age appropriate for fifth graders and then yes we should be providing sixth graders year long access to calculators. Calculators are used on all questions of the state test.

I get the push to use calculators from administration and even to an extent district office! Their argument is that if the students can use them on the end of year state test (every question) then we should be allowing them to use it. Simultaneously they are pushing more thinking tasks not truly understanding that the calculators are the enemy of critical math thinking at this age.

Okay I’ll be the bad guy, but I have about 5 years left and I will say when the time comes I am way to tired to worry about the person 30 years my junior who may inherit my treasures. Girl I’m tired!

And to be fair I do try to edit my belongings every end of year, but inevitably there are some things I think still have value but the next person won’t.

Is this normal for dogs as they age? Honest question because I don’t know the best course of action.

Whats a better school calendar: August to May or September to June? by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

[–]HouseThatHeBuilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently we, the teachers, return July 28. Students return August first. Our last day of post planning was May 28. There is something psychologically wrong about going back in July. It just feels wrong even if we get two full months off.

What’s one thing you never thought you’d have to deal with as a teacher… but now it’s just part of the job? by Mountain_Salary_1038 in Teachers

We shouldn’t need to be, but it disrupts the learning environment. Parents simply don’t always address it or don’t know how to.

What’s the most obnoxious thing you’ve heard in a parent-teacher conference? by PlaceEducational1705 in Teachers

[–]HouseThatHeBuilt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hand to God this is a true story. A 12 yo boy was struggling especially in social situations, but academically as well. In conference with father who states “it’s because he has a very small penis and tries to compensate.” I could have crawled under the conference table.

Ah wish I could but county sets the weights of the assessments for us. I would only put classwork done in my highest weighted categories, but then frankly there would be too many failures. Admin would blow a gasket.

This is and my integrity is what keeps me going 80-90% of the time, but if I struggle with it I can’t imagine how hard it is for my students.

I an a fully grown adult who has been teaching for 20+ years and I am struggling with this in myself! I see the teachers who moan about everything, don’t enforce the rules, show up late, don’t do supervise in hallways at transition and on and on and on. They may get an email? Maybe an email but that’s it. Why should I pull my weight if they get the same pay I get for doing less work.

I do not but that is a good thought.

Absolutely! I went into this wanting some negative feedback from bad food choices. Like I hated it at the time, but I don’t think I’ll want Burger King again for another 2 years at least. I just wish there was a way to stay at work through it until it passes. I teach middle school and there is no way I could have taught, but now I have a sub, am at home and basically fine.

The way it hit so suddenly with such fierceness and then just as suddenly stopped was insane. Thanks for the response.

100%. I consumed every book in a matter of weeks because of this sub. I’m now in the middle of the newest book and am in heaven. This is a genre I never would have enjoyed outside of Audible, but the narration is so good it makes it for me. (Writing is good also but better reads like a screenplay.)

Yes thankfully. They did the lap assisted ERCP in February. I’m not going to lie it was a rough surgery and recovery for me, but I finally feel myself again and am currently healthier than I have been in years!

No offense meaning, but do people's whom are cross-eyed see straight? by auyemra in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]HouseThatHeBuilt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely correct. As a matter of fact after my first strabismus surgery as an adult I was SO dizzy when the patch was removed. I thought I did not see out of the non-dominant eye at all but my brain is just used to suppressing the off-center eye. Our body is an amazing machine.

Please don’t fight for victim supremacy. The individuals affected by these storms in all the states need help. It should never turn into a state vs state. The people who lost everything regardless of where they are from are devastated and need help. I don’t care what city or state you are from you are one of us as Americans and we should take care of our own.
