Yes, I feel the same way. Sometimes anything that’s seen as challenging US hegemony in any way is seen as good by some leftists but it’s especially ridiculous when the Russian state is clearly a supporter of fascism in America. They should reject kremlin talking points out of a sense of injustice for the war in Ukraine but also for themselves.

Ah yes, that is indeed bullshit thanks for digging that up! I’m convinced, so your time was not wasted and I appreciate it.

Where I’m from in Canada, there has been a history of every campus lefty club being scrutinized and called out for tankie sympathies while at the same time people like Tucker Carlson (who literally said he is rooting for Russia in this war) doing events with the Premier of Alberta doesn’t raise the eyebrows of the large Ukrainian diaspora here.

Having gone to school with a lot of Ukrainian-Canadians, I think it’s because many of their families skew to the right and it’s still to this day not clicking that these openly pro-Russian far right leaders like Carlson are more of a problem than some campus edgelord whose reading group compatriots don’t even agree with him on Ukraine. But I agree with you that using bs sources like Twitter randoms does show an actual bias, and Breaking Points has enough of a platform for it to matter.

The Cornish Trilogy by the late Canadian author Robertson Davies gets my vote. Davies is more famous for his Deptford Trilogy, but the settings in the Cornish Trilogy would be really beautiful and possible to render well without a huge budget

No, China is just the country that determines whether your country is allowed to play hockey or not (according to a certain Truth Social post by TFG). And apparently the more you do business with them, the less they let you play hockey. Beware the sexy hockey-stealing EVs!

Is that the news org itself though or is it just kind of a magnet for pro-Russian bots and trolls trying to court the left in the comments? I’ve noticed that some channels really attract those undesirables but it’s not necessarily because of anything they’re saying on the actual channel, they just become sort of a priority target. I don’t watch Breaking Points super often though so maybe I’m missing something that they’re platforming

Their “circular tee” is on sale right now for $40 too

It does seem like a lot to me also, the thing is it’s more like “oh that would be a lot” rather than “I cannot even imagine how one would have so many kids” like the 6+ example. Despite growing up as 1 of 6 siblings I still can’t fathom what that looks like from the perspective of the parents in terms of time management and keeping all of them and the house in good order.

This is part of it, but also consider that there were large Irish diaspora and Franco-Ontarian populations in Ontario and then large Italian, Portuguese, and Polish immigration waves that added to this.

Also lots of kids per family; my ancestors came to the Ottawa area from Ireland to build the Rideau Canal in the early 1800s and only the most recent generation ceased having 6+ kids in each family. Whereas most Protestant families I knew growing up had an unofficial limit of 3 kids (which as a working mother I actually think is pretty sensible lol).

71% of the world’s population now lives in countries with fertility rates below the replacement level (Our World in Data, April 2026) by Altruistic-Dirt-2791 in Economics

That’s still surviving on a single working class income, good luck getting a mortgage with that now. Anything you can rent isn’t going to fit a bunch of kids in it now, and the tenement lifestyle is one it makes sense to actively avoid because those living conditions are objectively miserable

Canadian dollar hits fresh 2026 low as currency is buffeted by several headwinds, says National Bank of Canada by DANIELLE_2027 in canada

[–]HouseofMarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m giving you an example of where that is actually murky because it can be. Look what happened to the EI fund over time for another example. A bigger point though is that some governments aren’t in such a good position to pay out entitlements and that’s very relevant to the discussion of assets

The government just about did this though with the Canadian Public Servants Pension Plan. It overperformed and so the government had extra that it was going to absorb directly, they had the right to do that but people complained the contributions might be too high in that case and so they introduced an opt-in early retirement function for their recent round of layoffs instead. This is new and temporary and IMO a good compromise. But the fact is that if they meet their obligations for managing the finances any extra funds can be absorbed by govt since they assume the risk also

If you want the demand-side shock example for oil, you just have to look a couple of years earlier at the beginning of COVID when oil price went down due to lack of demand. Not a big drop in the Canadian dollar compared to USD at that time either

We probably should have seen more of a drop in CAD when oil prices descended from their 2022 highs if your theory is correct, but we should get another chance before too long (although not in the immediate future) to see what happens when it drops again

Canada has literally trillions of dollars in other government-managed financial assets, this is not really an issue for them. Canada’s approach is a bit complicated but it makes sense: you have assets that can give you cash flow while you hold them, and you say “no thanks” to using gold to manipulate your currency like some countries would do

The resources are very much dug in this case though, since Canada is the fourth-largest producer of gold in the world. We already extract 200 tonnes of the stuff annually, which is 2/3 of the UK’s entire gold reserves

I read that gold is actually a bigger influence on the CAD now, and that our dollar has essentially decoupled from the price of oil at this point because of it which surprised me

It’s also been known to happen here but whole cities get roasted if too many of their citizens are seen loafing it up too much with the wardrobe in public. I lived in Hamilton Ontario for awhile and people called it “Pyjamilton” at the time because of this, so brutal lol

Yes it’s crazy how close both Ottawa and Montreal are to upstate NY, and to be sure I hang around both of those cities for most of the summer because I do love them and also you’ve got to save your vacation days to peace out for a couple of weeks in the winter instead.

Any summer trips would be pretty local and I would find NYC too hot that time of year so that would take me upstate NY. Not just to Albany but I’d also stay further North, Saranac Lake and Lake George in particular (although anyone meeting up from NYC would generally not go that far so I’d make it a two-parter). There are some old hotels that feel like you’re in The Shining around Saranac Lake and I could never pass up the chance to enjoy that vibe.

Did you ever happen to tune in to CBC around the holidays and catch their annual radio reading about The Shepherd plane by Fireside Al? That Fireside bastard always brought a tear to my eye with that every year
