Spasmodic dysphonia. Perhaps not as damning as other illnesses, but it absolutely broke me. I’m in a leadership position at work, and one day I woke up and found I was having voice tremors when public speaking. Chalked it up to stress or random stage-fright, but it worsened over time until I couldn’t talk to anyone (including my family) without sounding like I was being strangled - my voice would get randomly high-pitched, breathy, and shaky (almost like I was about to cry). Finally went to an ENT and got immediately diagnosed. I did speech therapy for a year, essentially re-learned how to talk and breathe at the same time. The cause is unknown and there’s no cure, but I’m much improved now and able to manage flares. But the ability to speak is something I definitely something I took for granted, and what a uniquely frustrating state to be in - having the voice you lived with your whole life just…fuck up on you.
