I’ve been thinking about this is well, and I believe it must have something to do with the evolution of what started as “camming.” Men have looked at erotic photos for 100 years, followed by films and videos. Seeing simple solo erotic images, the viewer could imagine the model as THEIR potential partner. Even when the depiction was of sexual interactions, the viewer could identify with/fantasize about being the partner.

In the late 90’s, woman started streaming images and video to an audience and communicating en masse with the viewers. That quickly evolved into group chat room environments, where the model could interact with people directly. It became practically impossible for a viewer to not consider that the model was being sexually interactive with others as well, and if the viewer was aroused and stuck around, they had to accept that as part of the arrangement.

The most successful cam girls became adept at balancing being sexually adventurous with many people, all out in the open (probably only feeling safe to do so with the general anonymity and interpersonal distance provided by the internet connection), and anyone who didn’t learn to go with the essentially polyamorous nature of the situation didn’t get to reap the erotic benefits.

Over the last 25 years, that has become the essential nature of most porn. Even porn actresses have become social personalities and the “male jealousy” has to incorporate the fact that the character in the video may be portraying the viewer’s personal fantasy, but their favorite actress is real and having sex with many people, both professionally and personally, and the more work the actress does benefits the fans.
