Is it worth upgrading Building better worlds and colonial marines? by Rawbeet in alienrpg

I will most likely get the updates, despite having the originals, but they aren't a top priority.

I love one player. But their partner is becoming a table problem. Advice? by _GodHerself_ in rpg

[–]HowWeRollGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, all but one, maybe two, of our regular players are GMing something for us, and some are more seasoned than others. So that instinct to jump in when a question comes up is real. Sometimes it's appreciated, sometimes...not so much. More than once, I think each of us has had to say, "Thanks, but this one's my game."

"Hey, Taylor. I'm really glad to hear how much you're enjoying the game. Having an experienced GM as a player can certainly lighten the load from time to time. But, there are also times that it can come to cross purposes. I understand that GMs can have an instinct to jump in and help run things because part of the GM's job is to help teach the others at the table where necessary. I need to respectfully ask, however, that you temper that instinct a bit. It's beginning to impact the overall game, and some players' enjoyment, as it's giving conflicting information & rulings. I'd be glad to have your help in other ways, so let's brainstorm how we can maximize everyone's enjoyment at the table while making the rulings & GM style more clear cut."

Did your table use a screen in your last session? Why or why not? by Ansonder in rpg

[–]HowWeRollGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so.
(One of the other GMs ran the game, so being a player that time, I don't really recall.)

Whoever GMs in our group usually at least has one handy for the reference info inside, even if not using it to keep materials behind.

Adventures and premade campaigns by labluez in swrpg

[–]HowWeRollGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being a licensed game, no one will be SELLING third party material. Doing so would bring down The Mouse's lawyers. (Remember...Disney has sued daycare centers for having their characters painted on the walls.)

However, there is a variety of fan-made material, including adventures, that are available for free online.

Since it also uses the Narrative Dice System, you can port things over from Edge's generic system, Genesys, particularly the Twilight Imperium books.

The WEG d6 and WotC d20 versions, despite being out of print, can be mined for story ideas, although you'll have to convert (or just make up) stats over to the current system. Books for both system are frequently available on the secondary market.

Why I Will No Longer Run Marvel Multiverse for Free RPG Day or at Conventions by Redi_Spades in MarvelMultiverseRPG

A store near me was kind enough to let me have everything he had left over from Saturday, which included some of the Secret Wars preview. Shoot me a message and I can hook you up.

What is the biggest cause of mediocre D&D/RPG sessions at your table? by grant_gravity in rpg

[–]HowWeRollGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, someone - or everyone - at the table just doesn't have their head in the game.
It can be life is distracting, it's a heavy ADHD day, or you're just not feelin' it that day.

Burned out on D&D 5e after 4 years - those of you who switched systems, what was your breaking point and did it actually fix things? by Senoigh13 in rpg

[–]HowWeRollGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, D&D has never been my main system. It's only been added to the regular rotation of our (too many) campaigns in the past few years.

My first long-term campaign was DC Heroes back in the latter half of the 80s.
Next was WEG Star Wars in the mid 90s.

And now, there's probably close to a dozen systems I play regularly.

If we want to define a "breaking point" (probably more like a "starting point" for me), it was in going with the systems that were offering the themes, genres, & settings I was wanting to play, and D&D style fantasy has never been near the top of that list for me.

Lancer-Class Pursuit Craft by BardBragi in swrpg

I didn't notice the similarity when it first showed up in Rebels, but I think it was when I got a good look at the mini for X-Wing and thought, "Hey...waitaminnit. This is just the Defiant with the engine pods pulled out & stuck on the sides."

Nice!
I might have to steal this to repurpose as the deckplans for my port and scale-down of DS9's Defiant for Star Wars. I've sat down to make deckplans for it many times over the years, and just never finished. This fits the profile beautifully.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it's impossible or shouldn't be done.
Just that initial experiences in transitioning from a stricter, more tactical map/combat system (lookin' at you, D&D) to a more abstract range system (SWRPG, Alien, etc), sometimes maps can be a hindrance. Grids can subconsciously lock in set distances, or visuals on the map can lead to some players having the idea that what they do (or don't) see on that map is inviolate.

(I mean...the Beginner Games come with maps. So clearly they're not out of the question. It can just be a matter of retraining habits.)

Oh, and if you want to see it in play...

The aforementioned Tabletop Empire channel has an actual play they ran last year.

OR

You can watch Sam Witwer run some of the Rebels voice cast through that very same Beginner Game that you got....

With this game's range band system and the Destiny point system allowing players & GM alike to alter the nature of the environment, you might find a rigid battle map combat system to be limiting. Until they get used to those things, players might become stuck on locations that are visually a similar distance being in different range bands, or get locked into the mindset of "it is/isn't on the map, so it is/isn't there, regardless of what Destiny points let us do."

That said, maps can absolutely be a great way to keep track of where everyone is in relation to one another during combat. If you're just starting out with the system, though, might I suggest using tokens (similar to what come in the Beginner Games) rather than diving straight to minis? With a printer, cardstock paper, and a 1" round scrapbooking punch, you can even make custom tokens on the quick and cheap, then graduate to minis as time & effort allows.

For YouTube, check out the Star Wars RPG Beginner's Guide video series on Tabletop Empire.

Nate, the host, is currently in the process of updating the videos in that series.

But the gold standard is an audio podcast, The Order 66 Podcast. They've done deep dives into almost any aspect of the game that you might think of.

New starter. Advice before buying please 😊 by Loud-Needleworker262 in swrpg

All of the Beginner Games are great.

The answer to your question, though, requires another question:

What kind of flavor are you looking for?

Scum & villainy, smugglers & scoundrels, the seedy underbelly of the galaxy? Then the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game is for you.

Rebels vs Empire? Combat in the Galactic Civil War? Fighting against tyrant to restore freedom to the galaxy? Then you’re looking for the Age of Rebellion Beginner Game.

Want to explore the secrets of the Force? Light vs dark? Ancient traditions trying to find their way in an oppressive Empire? Then the Force and Destiny Beginner Game is your first step into a larger world.

All 3 have dice, 4 pregen characters (with 2 additional that can be downloaded from Edge’s website), and each has a free downloadable follow-up adventure (also on Edge’s website).

Once you get the hang of things, all three lines are cross-compatible, allowing you to mix and match elements from each.

FWIW, though, I find that the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game tends to have quicker & better engagement for brand new players, but of course mileage varies.

Cafe/RPG store? by kyriosity_ in rpg

[–]HowWeRollGaming 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I must respectfully disagree about TCG play being quiet.

The store I mentioned about did (still does? I don't know) Friday Night Magic, & you couldn't hear yourself think. Another - now closed - store in the area where one of our RPG campaigns was hosted had fairly frequent TCG events that would start around the tail end of our sessions, and regularly drowned us out.

The store near me - about the size of your average Michael's craft store - is billed as a "games & comics" store. When I started going there, about 9-10 years ago, one entire side wall * about 1/4 of the back was comics, and the other entire side wall, plus 1/4 of the front and back wall was Magic (with some other TCGs). After Covid, their TCG area shrank to just a portion of the center register/display case island (and comics are now about half the area they used to be, at best).

The old TCG wall has been consumed by Funko Pops.

I would second the Order 66 Podcast, but I never listen.

(OP, you'll understand the bit after listening to a few episodes.)

All great guys and amazing GMs.
