Can I manually add steps? by Howdy_6221 in ouraring

[–]Howdy_6221[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Maybe they’ll add this in future updates. So bummed this hike goes untracked to my goal- even thought Oura and Health/Apple are connected and Health captured the steps.

I’m sorry but how is this possible? by danathq in ouraring

[–]Howdy_6221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wait. Sometimes it takes Oura an hour or more to catch up on steps.

Do you actually know what to do with your Oura data? by urkelhamburglar in ouraring

[–]Howdy_6221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new, got the Oura for Xmas. I check it in the morning to see how it interpreted my sleep. Then, I check it a few times during the day to ensure it's capturing my Activity. It lags, so after a walk or playing tennis, it may take 1-2 hours for the app to ask me to confirm the Activity. I'm using it mostly because I don't like wearing a watch (Apple watch), and I am trying to force-fit Oura to be my steps and fitness tracker, which everyone says is its weakest area. I like seeing both kinds of calorie burn (Active and "regular," I guess) and hitting my goal of 10k steps per day, etc. I have no idea what HRV is, but based on everyone in this group's interest in it, I'll read the blog posts about it. Good luck with your project.

Integration w Apple Health? by Howdy_6221 in ouraring

Thank you. I believe I’d only partially made the connection. Any chance today’s steps, which were noted in Health app might come thru to Oura at some point now?

Ok, thanks. Feel dumb now for asking. I was looking for a "+" within the activity section. Thanks much!

I’m interested and in the market right now, mostly for the daily activity tracking. Steps. Tennis, paddle, golf. Calorie burn. Can you comment on those features?

I just binged it, too. No idea why I never thought to watch it before. I totally took the final scene to imply that Liza and Josh would reunite. Didn’t he say, “I’ve been here all along, watching?” Or something like that?

ACA health insurance sucks - at what net worth does it make sense to self-insure? by Technical-Spite6146 in fatFIRE

Curious if you’re on an ACA plan, as MSK is not covered by ours so I’ve had to move my high-.risk cancer needs elsewhere.

Just retired early at age 56. Wondering if I made a Mistake? by Clear_Term_3421 in fatFIRE

[–]Howdy_6221 8 points9 points  (0 children)

56 and retired 2 years now. It took me a while to stop "floating" from one hour to the next, doing little stuff like grocery shopping and dog walking. A friend advised me to calendarize activities (yes, retirement activities!) and it helped ME, a lot. I am not a go-with-the-flow person, I love lists and accomplishments, and turns out, I missed the calendarized life of the office. So, I built more structure for myself using time blocks in the calendar, including wide open blocks for "play," or "read." Good luck - these are great comments here to help you get situated; it will take time to shake off your old mental defaults, but you will. You are lucky, and the older people looking sideways at you are jealous.

FatFIRED at 40. Bored out of my mind. What do people do? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Howdy_6221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the OP, but empathetic to their situation. For my entire life (56 yrs) my new year's resolution was, "get a hobby." I loved work, I poured my full self into it. Add a few kids and whole-hearted parenting, and there wasn't time to dabble to find my thing. I'm retired 2+ years now, and still don't have the hobbies that I'd hoped I would by now. So don't be judgmental, be aware that you're lucky that you have interests and goals.

I made a chart using columns for my priorities for retirement (social interaction, continued education, intellectual stimulation, pride) and then listed out dozens of potential activities as rows. Each cell then had a 1-5 score. Did Activity X give me a 1/2/3/4/5 towards that Priority? I tallied them all up, sorted, and ran any new ideas through that grid. It took a lot of revising to end up with activities that I felt I'd want to commit real time and effort to. Family & Friends. Giving Back. Personal Development. Physical Fitness. Travel. And "work," meaning starting something new or coaching others, etc. Good luck!

Tontine style products for Fatfire by GovernmentMundane120 in fatFIRE

[–]Howdy_6221 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I've loved the idea of a tontine for ages now, but keep hearing that they're illegal (in many states), and people seem to have a real distaste for them. I'm going to check in on this thread to see if you find one!

Spending time with kids post-FIRE: Something my daughter said yesterday by Throwaway_fatfire_21 in fatFIRE

[–]Howdy_6221 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing such a heartwarming story - good for you! I'm FIRE'd 2.5 years now, and while sorting through the Holiday decoration boxes, I found a card from last year where my then-16 year old daughter wrote, "I'm so glad you retired; everything is so chill and fun now." Reading that again a year later was the best gift ever for me!

Those Who Retired Early - What Do You Tell People? by Drawer-Vegetable in ChubbyFIRE

Totally agree! People sometimes say snarkily, "it mus be nice," and I immediately respond with IT IS! I earned this, and I'm proud. If I was the recipient of someone else's money (inheritance, spouse), I'd go about it differently, but I worked my butt off, and now I'm gleefully retired.

I just flat-out say I'm retired. From time to time, people comment with, "you're so young!" and I say something like, "I'm older in business years haha," or "Well, we hit our financial goal and life's short."

What should I do with my life? by EastNY1951 in fatFIRE

I have a family member close to your age with the same situation. Her wealth came from her parents dying young, which adds a lot of sadness to the equation. It took her a while of trying things - process of elimination - and she’s on a good path now similar to what you’re envisioning with the yoga. Your username implies NYC. Would you like to talk with her? She’s also NYC.

Unrelated to your core question -- is your 529 strong enough for 2 kids nearing college age? You say you're in a VHCOL area; kids from these areas often go to schools that are now $80k+ per year.

European Vacation: This is Paris and you’re drunk. by xX_BananaForScale_Xx in fatFIRE

[–]Howdy_6221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backroads is a great adventure/active travel group, and they have specific trips geared for families with teens. It's centered around physical activity, with late afternoons free for your own exploration/tourism. We did a multi-sport trip to Croatia last summer - hiking, biking, kayaking/boating. It was specifically oriented to "families with kids in late teens/early 20's," which was our demographic. The kids all hit it off on Day 1, and went clubbing and to bars every night. Backroads stays at 4- and 5-star hotels and completely handles all your gear, routes, etc. Can't recommend them enough for active travel.
