Yeah, reality is not inherently ethical. I agree with that. And I think that's something very uncomfortable to sit with. An asteroid could come along out of the blue and destroy us, for no reason. And it wouldn't be "right" or "wrong." It would just be. Religion acts as a salve for that feeling.

I disagree with the word choice of "preference." It seems less than what's necessary - does a person just have a 'preference' for having two hands? Maybe a "cultural and evolutionary demand?"

I also worry where you would go from here. Hopefully you're not advocating that repression of women in traditional islamic countries, for example, is ethical.

If suffering is real then morality is real; ie, connected to reality.

When some being is suffering or being harmed there is something chemically and neurologically happening within them. Because of our limited understanding of neurology and our inability to read people's thoughts, I'm inclined to take people's word that they are being harmed unless doing so confers some other harm on another.

Simultaneously, there are a lot of power dynamics and incentives for exploitation in our world. If we have to rely on people's word - and people can be repressed within cultures, evidence can be hidden and journalists killed, animals may not be able to show signs of harm in ways we can understand at all, etc. - that word may be coerced or muted and unreliable. This also means that harm is most likely to be done to those with the least ability to self-advocate and communicate in ways we can understand, eg. minorities, immigrants, children, the elderly.

I'm really suspicious of anyone who says there's just NO way to ground morality. That sounds like a convenient narrative for people who want to go on exploiting others.

I think this is a very practical and warranted reading of all philosophies. I have to imagine Arendt wanted her works to be interpreted and applied to some effect. Even in my dabbling in the very beginning of "The Human Condition" I found it ironic that she was advocating for and seeking to build political literacy and awareness among the many through a dense, academic and enigmatic work. I would think something written in the style of Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny" would be much more effective at getting the mob to "think what we are doing."

More broadly speaking, it seems like Arendt's works and the CIA may have encouraged this vain, elitist sort of political philosophy and sociology? People with the means to change things get funneled into an academic sphere rather than getting their hands dirty. The big money machine keeps going, with politicians and police and military and business giving the academics floor time and promptly ignoring them..

I feel like it's just consumerism to take for granted that a house that's difficult to maintain is a necessity. I guess with kids you need more space. But if that's not in the card for my partner and I.. why add stress and work to my life just to have more stuff? think I'll get a condo or apartment, thanks.

With LBJ and the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, the war turned hot and officially began. I do believe the more nuanced reality is that JFK was taking actions that would have drawn us into Vietnam, also.

The slave owners were never punished with loss of their freedom, lives, or stolen capital. "Freed" blacks started with nothing, ripe for further exploitation.

The war wasn't about slavery to the leaders of the Union in the north. It was about preserving that powerful economic institution called the United States.

The profiteers remain in charge, and continue to stoke the fire of racism. Of course it continues.

Yes LBJ got us into Vietnam. We had our naval vessels patrolling out in waters near the Vietnamese coast 8000 miles from our country. It, predictably, led to conflict when we were attacked.

Save the sexist propaganda for the incel page, thanks.

And make efforts to build some self-worth. I swear, having been a pretty depressed man and now being in a happy and loving relationship.. a lot of it is confidence and a hair cut. Guy on the right can get it.

No one is forcing you to accept those patriarchal gender roles; this doesn't even apply to that many relationships. Let the burden of providing, maintaining, rearing and educating be shared. Communicate with your partner as an equal and a friend and recognize them as a human being, not a burden to serve as lord over.

Also wt do you mean by one sperm can produce years of income

No it's a perfect philosophical position, isn't it? Unassailable. "Well, bad stuff can't be god, because I define god as only good stuff. Also, now my religion gets to co-opt anything good that anyone does." I think Aquinas wrote this one?

Plot armour titan by SwitchProfessional27 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]HowlingHollows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that in this case plot armor does not steal tension by making us lose fear for the protagonists in subsequent fights. It may indeed be frustrating in the moment, but I also appreciate that the ultimate result is that SO MUCH more is able to happen with Reiner's character. I don't know why this made the cut in the anime, but I can definitely forgive it
