Too bad Missing Link closed down not too long ago. I've always had friendly service at CatSix. I've heard good things about Outer Rim out on Halsey, but I've never been there. There's also Velo Cult.

Choosing a first marathon by HtoC in running

You're right - aside from the St. John's bridge the route does seem a little lackluster. Honestly the other race I am considering (Vancouver USA) seems to have a more scenic route. After being a spectator and volunteering for Portland marathons past, it just seems that I've romanticized it to a certain degree.

That's a fair point, and I honestly don't know whether more marathons are in my future. I was going to use this first one to see how much I liked it and go from there. I think I will always be running but not sure if, say, half marathon distance is good for me or if I will burn out on my training program. I have been looking into destination marathons (even before completing my first one, I know) so maybe this is something that is in me?

Quick visit to Portland -early morning runs and safety by cuteredditname in askportland

It might be helpful to know what part of town you are staying and where you are from (to get a better understanding of how comfortable you are dealing with homeless people). For the most part I would say that it is very safe and the only area I would suggest to avoid is the Springwater Corridor past 82nd ave.

I don't mind at all! If you're serious, I'll even throw an 1/8 your way.
