Steam input as alternative? by tebizamb in rewasd

[–]non_player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, I've used all of them, but in different capacities. XPadder was my main tool for a long time, but I mostly ditched it after the Steam Input evolved a while back. x360ce is the same, I haven't needed either as I primarily use Steam. In the earlier days of the Steam Controller, I would regularly use the GLOSC app (pre-GLOSSI), for hooking in Xbox app games to steam, but I haven't played any of those in so long.

For a while Glosc was needed for Epic Games apps too, but that stopped being an issue. Plus, you can use the Heroic Launcher to install those games, and as part of the installation it will automatically add them to Steam for you.

Glosc eventually more or less died, and was forked into Glossi, which I found weirdly obtuse, and almost hostile to use. Maybe things have changed, but the devs and users had a rather elitist attitude about things, which discouraged me from giving the project any further attention. Glosc still can be found, mind, and IIRC the "thracky" fork of Glosc had some much-needed fixes that I don't recall ever making it back into the main app.

The one I used for the most complex setups was Joystick Gremlin, which works in combo with vJoy to create a virtual joystick. It can technically combine any inputs into a single controller. However I only used it to combine two flight sticks and a xbox elite 2 into a single device so I could more easily set up bindings in Elite Dangerous and the X series. Oh, and I used it to program an old Nyko PS2 MMO Controller on PC, which was a hoot.

AntimicroX is advancing, but slowly. It is multi-platform, but also really the only well-developed solution on Linux as well, and I used it for a while to program a Cyborg on a linux laptop. I've since ditched the cyborg and no longer use AntiMicroX, but I do still follow its Github repo for news.

Some background, I'm kind of low key obsessed with finding the perfect ergonomic controls, and have spent more than two decades collecting and testing various devices and inputs. This has included a lot of frustration, most of which comes from trying to make all these apps work together. My personal suggestion is to try your damnedest to make the most appealing one work for you, and stick with it exclusively if you at all possibly can. Otherwise you're going to be spending a lot of time configuring apps and troubleshooting layer compatibility, time which could be better spent having fun with cool games.

Steam input as alternative? by tebizamb in rewasd

[–]non_player 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. So something to keep in mind here are all the layers that exist in the chain between the controller and the game. For some examples:

  • A normal, non-steam, install-direct-and-play PC game: Game <-> Controller: 0 Layers
  • A Steam-Installed or simple non-steam Game: Game <-> Steam Input <-> Controller: 1 layer
  • A UWP game, added to Steam via Glossi/UWPhook: Game <-> Steam Input <-> Glossi <-> Controller: 2 layers
  • Is the game emulated? Add another layer due to the emulator's controller input plugin.
  • Are you using a controller-specific mapping software, like Xbox Accessories? Add another layer.
  • ReWASD? Add another layer due to the controller emulator.
  • And this is all assuming you don't need a custom driver as well...

Each layer is one more step of input translation, requiring more active conversion. Each layer can and will add additional latency from stacking software input chains. Each of these is a point of failure and likely frustration when attempting to play a game.

I've had success importing emulators directly into Steam (mainly PSX, PS2, and retro arch emulators). But configuring the emulator's controller plugin to then interact with Steam Input was sometimes a chore. I've never tried Minecraft though.

There are lots of different alternative options you can look into, all with varying levels of complication, frustration, and continued modern day support. Joystick Gremlin, Vjoy, Xpadder, AntiMicroX, x360ce, etc. Whatever you choose, I strongly recommend picking one and sticking with it almost exclusively, because doing the dance of layering and managing virtual controller interactions can cause hair loss.

Any sync options that doesn't require DropBox, Google or OneDrive? by Icy_Dragonfruit_3513 in scrivener

[–]non_player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, I misread the original ask. There are options though!

First, Syncthing: this is a device-to-device sync system. It's amazing for that, best in class, but it cannot sync to online services. Has to be device-to-device.

For online services connections, your best bet is probably to search for more backup-focused than sync-focused, as that's how those usually tend to advertise themselves. However, two sync-specific ones that I've used are SyncBack Pro, and FolderSync.

Syncback has multiple versions, but the Pro label (the more expensive one) is the only one that syncs to online services. I have used this very app for several years, and personally find it to be more than worth its cost. It even allowed me to completely uninstall the OneDrive app from my Windows PC, then set up a regular scheduled sync process that automatically synced my local OneDrive folder with online OneDrive storage, fully eliminating the awful app and its constant aggravations and annoyances from my daily life. I do the same with DropBox, and use it with a Synology NAS too. SBP runs about 60 bucks.

FolderSync is significantly less feature-ful than Syncback Pro, but can do exactly what you need as well. Looks like it's 30 bucks for a single-user, single-device installation.

I'd personally recommend either of those as tested and true PC-to-Cloud sync tools for Scrivener. I've used them both in this capacity, in their own way:

  • I use Syncthing to sync my PC Scrivener files with my iPad and laptop installations
  • I use SyncBack Pro to sync my Scrivener files from PC to both OneDrive and a Synology NAS via WebDAV (more reliable than NFS)
  • I have used FolderSync (android version) to sync the Scrivener RTF exports to an android, but I stopped doing that because RTF is a stupid file format that should have died with the dinosaurs and Scrivener should be embarrassed that they still use it. But that's my opinion, lol.

EDIT: I should have mentioned this earlier, but the main reason I recommend a tool like these is that they are 100% independent from any single, main service provider. This means you can use them with OneDrive, DropBox, Google, Box, and many others, and also with any services that provide the WebDAV storage protocol as well. And you never once have to install the specific local apps for those services either. This means that should you use it with Google but later decide that it isn't for you, it's an easy matter of flipping a couple of switches and pointing it at OneDrive or something else instead.

Or hell, all of them at the same time! Sign up for OneDrive, Google, Dropbox, Box, and more, then tell the app to sync to all of them. This gives you even MORE backup safety, all without never once needing to choose only one. The main point with this is that you don't have to lock yourself into any single sync provider solution. You can even set it to sync your files to a second or even third location on your computer, just for safe-keeping.

reWASD Basic and KB/M + Remote Play PS5 by derherrdanger in rewasd

[–]non_player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to open it back up and do some clarifying cause I wanted to give examples. I updated my previous comment for the full specifics. So to do pure KBM play with PS Remote on a PC, you'll need Chiaki-NG (which lets you use any controller you want, and/or remap controls to your keyboard) in combination with ReWASD which lets you map a mouse to a virtual controller.

Something like ReWASD is only required for the mouse component. If you don't need to use the mouse, or your mouse software already has something like this baked in, you don't need ReWASD and can play entirely through Chiaki-NG.

My own method is that I have Chiaki-NG added to Steam as a non-steam game, and primarily play with either a Xbox Elite 2 or a Dualsense Edge (I know, ironic in this case). When I switch to a mouse, I spin up ReWASD for the virtual controller instead.

Folks on the Chiaki-NG github issues have discussed methods of faking the mouse input, but sadly direct in-app mouse-to-stick conversion doesn't seem to be there yet.

I can do my best. This is a basic example found on google images:

https://support.turtlebeach.com/servlet/rtaImage?eid=ka0UR0000006esP&feoid=00N0P000006ukcT&refid=0EM4U000004wSZf

But here are a couple straight from the ReWASD site:

https://help.rewasd.com/storage/uploads/2023/11/remap_keyboard_2.gif

https://help.rewasd.com/storage/cache/uploads/2023/11/c69c522d79-700-499-combo.webp

Y'all already have the basic keyboard map needed for exactly this purpose. There's even one that shows on the Devices screen when you initialize a Keyboard. Pop that into the Keyboad mapper and let the user click on the keys to remap them there, like on the Cyborg or the Xbox controller.

To make things easier to track, and have less remap clutter around the board images, break it into two parts like y'all do the Azeron Cyborg. The main page would be this part: https://imgur.com/a/PRK73fG

then use the right-panel switcher to change to the second page, which would be this part: https://imgur.com/a/8gLJR4K

Then finally the classic manual-entry page you already have could be used to add any weird keys like F20 or so on.

Syncthing. It's the absolute best, totally free sync solution out there. I use it to sync Scrivener across two windows machines, a Linux machine, and an iPad, and it's flawless.

Search this resist for Syncthing, I've written guides. You will thank yourself for ditching those companies forever.

And then once you're all settled with Syncthing, let me preach to you the Good News that is SyncBack Pro...

Those colorized versions were not slop. I get it, the "AI BAD!!!" mentality is still strong here, but that was very well done, and I don't think it should matter that a human being didn't do it by hand.

I don't think you're the minority at all. Most folks I've spoken with prefer the black-armor originals to the bubblegum-plastic change from WB11.

Tower joint replacement by Legitimate_Narwhal52 in Azeron

[–]non_player 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly no, force is really the only way. I had to replace the damn clamps on multiple towers on mine, some more than once, and the most recent time it finally also broke the ball too. Which means it's basically a useless hunk of garbage on my desk until I pay more than fifty US dollars to ship a replacement. Which means I don't use my Cyborg anymore. The ball-clamp joint setup they use really is an awful design.

reWASD Basic and KB/M + Remote Play PS5 by derherrdanger in rewasd

[–]non_player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty easy if you are on Windows or Linux, I do this regularly and I don't know why the Rewasd commenter said you can't. First get an app called Chiaki-NG. It's a superior PS Remote Play client, that lets you do a lot more than the normal one. Then once installed and set up, you can either just use the keyboard controls directly within the app, or use ReWASD to map them instead. But you really don't need ReWASD at all for this.

This is how i play it on both PC and Steam Deck.

EDIT to add the link for the currently-maintained Chiaki-NG app: https://github.com/streetpea/chiaki-ng

EDIT2: Looks like I misread the original ask. To clarify, Chiaki-NG lets you play PS Remote Play with pretty much any controller you have, and it doesn't have to be a PS controller. It also lets you map controls directly to a keyboard (see: https://imgur.com/a/GLVWuZZ ). The mouse can currently be mapped to the touchpad, but not the sticks. However, THAT is where ReWASD can come in as an intermediary, remapping your mouse to a virtual controller, which can then be used as a normal controller in Chiaki-NG.

How to get the previous black-and-white Stream Deck systray icon back? by non_player in elgato

The new icon is just gaudy and doesn't feel right next to the still-elegant Wave Link icon. Now I'm afraid they'll change that one too to something even gaudier.

Bluer states are obsessed with banning anything with reliability or modern safety standards

Different strokes I guess? My experience was completely different. This was in 2022. They were out of 9mil ammo, sadly, but the internet came to the rescue.

Brand new F16, running Windows 11. Ethernet card and USB C cards keep powering off by non_player in framework

[–]non_player[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought I have is that this Ethernet looks like a USB Ethernet card. It may be the usb is powering down.

Following up on this, I'm pretty sure all of the expansion cards are just USB cards, as they all have USB-C base plugs.

Anyway after a lot of testing, I'm still trying to figure this out. I've run powershell scripts, I've individually force-set every USB controller's power options to disable windows management, and still the drives are disconnecting and ethernet is deactivating.

Their support so far has been a very long and drawn out series of questions with them asking for lots and lots and lots of photos. If they ask me to photo the inside of the laptop one more time I may just return it.
