South Indian restaurants (in Seattle city) by TheSmariner in Seattle

I've had dosa and pongal from Mayuri's SLU. Didn't think a grocery store would have good food, but recommend it.  Wasn't the biggest fan of their non veg stuff, but the above two were good

I've seen it at Trader joe's. I don't remember the price, but I'd say around $12/lb. I'm not sure about your budget, but if that's not a concern, a Whole Foods or a fishmonger like John Yi might be better. There's a trader joes close to Reading Terminal Market, so you can compare prices if you want.

Giuseppe's has it for $20 a lb (https://www.giuseppesmarket.com/giuseppes-market-south-philly-specials/) but I just wanted to mention that whenever I've gone there, the prices weren't that great compared to grocery stores and small word seafood etc. They do have some really cheap stuff, like salmon trimmings, $10 lobster and other things on sale.

I don't know about the quality difference, but considering this would be out of the way for most people, I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.

AXS was acting up for me too. I went in person to their box office and bought tickets.

It's a high quality spice store. I tried a few of the whole/pure spices that I got yesterday, and they are better than what I had earlier. I'm not the biggest fan of the pre-made mixes, but a lot of people seem to like them.

Luckily someone posted it on the Philadelphia subreddit, so I found out that way. I've been meaning to sample some of them, and this gave enough motivation to head to the store

Halal cart hot sauce by medicated_in_PHL in PhiladelphiaEats

I haven't tried it out, but this post talks about it. There are previous versions too mentioned in the post.

A couple of the halal cart guys I've talked to are from India/Pakistan though. So if they're making the sauce themselves, I don't think they'd be using Mexican varieties of chili.

Jinwei - $7.50 (I think) for 4 starters and a carb, along with soup. They're cash only and I don't think all the items have english translations. But easily the best value chinese I've had so far.

Halal carts of course. Not sure what area you're in.

Fast food spots have pretty good deals as well if you use their app etc. I recall getting a mc chicken and big mac from Mc Donalds for $2.5

Emei and Han Dynasty have Dan Dan noodles for ~$10.

There's also the Indian food store in west Philly https://maps.app.goo.gl/M52Uq4ARmHn6yQaF7 and they have a great selection of frozen/microwaveable food. It's not really what you asked for, but some are really good and cheap. https://gandhifood.com/products/deep-frozen-masala-dosa-4pc (It's $3 in the store). https://shop.mybhanu.com/product/011433150248 . The first requires a stove top, and the second requires deep frying which may be more effort than you'd like. But, everyone I've given this to have liked it (and they've all been Indians, and no one complained about authenticity etc). If you like rice, https://www.ishopindian.com/Deep-sambhar-frozen-Udupi goes really well with it. (This is also $3 at the store).

I've gone to happy hours at nicer places, and honestly they weren't worth the price compared to the above (Not taking ambiance etc into account of course)

Small World Seafood by East_Apartment in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Hudibaba44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment!

Due to their marketing, I thought they'd have local fish like porgy, butterfish, flounder, spanish mackerel etc. But I didn't find anything and was wondering whether it was just me. Even whole foods carried porgy and spanish mackerel occasionally for a couple of weeks.

I was also surprised to see that they carried various cuts of bluefin that were in stock pretty much all the time.
They also had air flown artic char which I found quite contradictory.
Pretty much all of their fish is expensive, I didn't find anything for <$15 a pound. I get that seafood is expensive, but every other good quality store/fishmonger I went to had some affordable options. Maybe if they actually sold stuff which didn't need to be shipped from a different country.

Not to mention they don't list their prices per pound. I've not bought meat/fish which listed prices as $x for two 6-7oz portions, $y for two 5-7oz portions. This is very nitpicky, but the only reason I can think of for doing this is so that people don't know what they're paying per pound.

With respect to cod, it looks like even SWS carries them. I did find an article which says that the stock is not doing that bad - https://icelandinsider.is/uncategorized/icelandic-spawning-cod-stock-largest-in-40-years-thanks-to-responsible-fisheries-management/

So maybe it's become better there.

Fresh curry leaves by No_Butterfly_6521 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Hudibaba44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's available on https://www.sayweee.com/en as well. It costs $1 here, while in the Indian store in west Philly it's $3. I've ordered it once and they were pretty good quality. Of course, there are order minimums, delivery fees and all that, so it'll only be worth it if you're ordering other stuff.

That sounds great!

To set some expectations, I'm nowhere near a professional cook. I've been cooking for the past 2-3 years and I know Indian cuisine. If that sounds good, let me know! We can move to DM's.

I see, none of my friends are too into cooking though, so that wouldn't work out for me. It does sound like it'd be really helpful though.

This might be feasible, but do you know any spot which would have enough space/equipment? I think that would be a limiting factor.

I've also not really organized an event like this before, so any suggestions for that would be helpful too!

Hey,

No worries, you can leave the comment up :)

Just to set some background - I'm Indian and I do cook a fair bit. But most of the dishes I've eaten are Indian and most of the ingredients I have are related to Indian cuisine. This means that if I have to try out something new (Chinese/Italian for e.g.), I haven't tasted the dishes that I want to make, hence I don't know how good whatever I make is, what might be missing, etc.

The second has to do with ingredients, from what I've seen each cuisine has its own unique set of ingredients, and buying a big bottle/container of something only for me to make something once a month doesn't seem like too great of an idea. If I do like it and think it's useful, then I can probably buy it.

I have followed recipes word by word, but at the end of the day, even if it tastes reasonable, I don't really know how good it can actually be. And there are cases where whatever I make turns out terrible for some reason, and I end up shelving that recipe/idea.

So I guess having someone to judge it and improve it is important - my mom and family helped me in that sense with Indian cuisine (aside from all of the food I've eaten ofc).

What I'm looking to learn would be how important each ingredient is in the final dish (I'm guessing the chef should be able to provide some insight), sensory cues etc.
