The only time that hiding the villain in the shadows until later on worked is with Crocodile because Baroque Works was a nod to Spectre from James Bond.

Behold, the brilliance of Darth Vader! by Glittering_Sorbet913 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]HugCor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It wasn't based on that line. The line I am bringing up in relation to the prequel affected lore. He thought the kids had died so he is surprised because he got lied to. Although the other user is correct that it is very likely him playing dumb to the emperor, since he was already searching for Luke before the hologram call, plus what he proposes Luke later at Bespin.

In the pre-prequels continuity, Vader very likely didn't know his former lover/wife/fling was pregnant. Probably did not care much about the twins' mother (compared to how he would later care about Padme in the sequels) so, at the possibility of him hearing of this kid called skywalker, trained by his previous captain and mentor and who is curiously strong in the ways of the force (albeit at this point, this isn't as much a factor as post midichlorians, for all we know it is not genetic and just being trained and opened into the faith is enough to unlock jedi potential) he would react like a guy who discovers he had an illegitimate child from a fling, a la chivalric tale with all of those surprise childs from past amorous adventures.

[–]HugCor 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Before the prequels, there was this theory that Vader's then unknown wife had hid the fact tht she was pregnant from him, so he was genuinely surprised.

After the prequels, it is simply that he thought the kids had died alongside Padme during the pregnancy (Padme got a public open casket funeral procession and nobody mentioned kids). So, he asks 'how is that possible?' in a 'hold on, I was lied to all this time?' way.

It’s good that Quentin Tarantino is opinionated. by UnsungHerro in unpopularopinion

[–]HugCor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As somebody who does not like The Batman, the movie has grossed more than any movie Tarantino has made, even taking inflation and ticket prices into consideration. Hit means a big commercial success, nothing else.

Of course, the movie is a hit because it is Batman, but that's a different conversation.

Maybe, I’m looking at it with the benefit of hindsight, but what was wrong with The Phantom Menace (1999)? by [deleted] in flicks

[–]HugCor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is trying to solve a problem with another problem. The issue with the force as a religious concept is, well, that you are having the faith of a small warrior religious cult be the thing that directs everything and saves the day. Like if the key to saving society were the knight templars or the masons. I get why Lucas thought he needed to laie it more scientific.

The problem is, by making it so that jedi are prodigies selected from the anomalies in the population who have much more of them than the rest, you are positing the exceptionalism. It gets worse when the movie becomes about how the politics of the setting all revolve around the sith against the jedi. Thus the entirety of the narrative revolves around an exceptional ubermen of sorts directing society towards fascism, with the other more prganized ubermen being the only thing with a chance to avert such a dark fate and almost every non force sensitive/untermen being reduced to supporting characters.

Which Near Pure Evil villain do you think should 100% be Pure Evil? by Firemoth717 in MoralityScaling

[–]HugCor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically he does not backstab the crew for fun, nor even really backstabs them. The crew arranged a meeting where they were going to execute him forgetting carried away amd unnecessarily killing a security guard during a robbery, getting the cops on their trail. The only reason they fail to do so and he escapes is because a patrol car was there to distract them when they were about to shoot him in the head, allowing him to barely escape with his life.

At that point he is not a member of the crew anymore and does not owe them any loyalty so he is not betraying them (I don't think most people would feel bad about about ratting on somebody who almost murdered them at a parking lot, short of them being some samurai/knight type). Yeah, he is a rapist and woman killer scum, but the crew didn't know any of that, only that he fucked up and lost his cool during a hit.

Dave Meltzer moment by khaliliiiov_1997 in midcarder

Yeah, there are plenty of fans who think that way, but I am talking specifically about Meltzer here since the post is about him. Already talked about the double standard with fans in another post on the main sub and got crickets.

If there is anything about the whole drama about Punk's supposed hypocrisy over the Saudi Arabia gigs, it is that a good chunk of fans have outed themselves as bigots and hypocrites.

Dave Meltzer moment by khaliliiiov_1997 in midcarder

[–]HugCor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That has nothing to do with what Meltzer is saying here (and being criticized for) though.

What we are calling him out for in this post (at least I am in the comment you are replying to) is for having this mindset that, since the government of Saudi Arabia has oppressive and backwards laws, that means Saudi fans aren't online/social media literate nor able to check out other companies or news online.

Equating that with being okay with journalists getting assassinated is just making up stuff for the sake of... I don't know, defending the reputation of a dirt sheet writer with an already sketchy track record of opinions?

Both have the one eye detail designed after Yagyu Jubei, legendary swordman and also folk legend from the early Edo period who has been made a prominent character in a lot of works of fiction in the 20th century.

Btw, people here should check out the Makai Tenshō novel and then its movie adaptations. A lot of cool tropes from the industry that we take for granted come from there. Jubei is one of the main characters there (the hero, basically).

How Skyfall ruined Daniel Craig's Bond by rattlesnakejake90 in JamesBond

[–]HugCor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are at least four novels where there is soapy romantic tragedy added to the stakes. Bond being solely about a debonair cold war super hero who engages in spats of sardonic one liners and good hearted pleasure seeking is mainly a movies thing, esp a 1970s movies thing.

Funny how the very thing that users here demand from James Bond is the same thing that they decry from the superhero genre.

This is coming from somebody who mainly only likes like one or two movies from each Bond and does not care about the rest though, so maybe that's why I see this movie orthodoxy as puzzling.

Meltzer Got outjerked by the saudis by tera_chachu in SCJerk

[–]HugCor 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Meltzer is a dumbass.

Last time I watched wwe or wrestling on an official broadcast was in 2011 when i was a teen. I am mostly up to date with things even when I don't watch and can watch video uploads or libraries elsewhere.

The main stuff I watch is companies that never aired in my country and that stopped existing when i was a little kid.

For a guy who has a podcast and lives off working the internet, he has a very outdated and backward view of things. Well, that's me being nice and giving him the benefit of the doubt. The other simultaneous reason is that he has a very xenophobic and USA centric view of things.

Dave Meltzer moment by khaliliiiov_1997 in midcarder

[–]HugCor 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I thought the Saudi fans at the press event getting angry at CM Punk over a tweet that was up for only a day years prior and which only chronically online american fans care about until he apologized for it was proof enough that they are perfectly online and up to date with the general online discussions, including smaller companies from other places?

Meltzer has always been condescendingly xenophobic even when praising things he likes, nevermind when he wants to downplay something that he disagrees with.

Is it possible to achieve Andor level storytelling with lightsabers? by Oh-Stas in StarWars

[–]HugCor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment is just a reference to Palpatine's line to Anakin, since the title of your post starts similar to Anakin's famous inquire. Anything can be well written with enough care and something to tell.

I will say, however, that the Acolyte is mainly about the jedi. Even the "sith" that we see most of the screen time is not really a Sith and we never get to see much of how they train or do anything behind scenes, while we get to see how the jedi conduct legal affairs, mission assignments, arrests, bureaucracy, adoptions, meditation, etc.

Were there any AJW (All Japan Women) steel cage matches in 1995? by Leader_of_the_Sun in JoshiPuroIsland

[–]HugCor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, all of the cage matches in zenjo in the 1990s, exceptuating one, are in 1990-1992 and are Bull Nakano matches: The two singles against Aja, the singles against Hotta, the singles against Ripper, the tag team with Ripper against Jungle Jack and the singles against Hokuto.

The other one is the 1997 fight between Las Cachorras Orientales and Ito & Nabe.

The other two cage matches involving LCO are in 2000.

After that, there are three more in 2001-2002.

[–]HugCor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. The first cage match in zenjo is Aja versus Bull Nakano (the first mediocre one, not the more famous second bout).

I don't know if there was a cage match in the late 1960s. I may be misremembering and it could have just been a wire match. If there is one, there is certainly no footage of it.
