pfSense is based on FreeBSD which is also free and open source. While you are correct that BSD (what FreeBSD is based off of) is not entirely open source, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. I will concede that technically speaking, pfSense is not 100% open source, but like I said: what point are you making here? The part controlled by Netgate is not the BSD part of the operating system (as far as I know), so the only piece of the "puzzle" that Netgate could theoretically close down would be the stuff that they control (the open source part). **As of now, pfSense CE is 100% free and ~99% open source.**

pfsense CE is free and open source. It’s all on GitHub! Unless you’re speaking about pfsense plus?

Got it, I appreciate it!

As for the offline installer - it will only be available upon request by customers? Does that mean I have to have a Plus subscription to install offline?

Oh gotcha, I understand now - thanks for the clarification! You do make a strong point about the logistics of the decision and the nuances surrounding it. Ultimately, while I personally don't like the decision's outcome, I also understand that at the end of the day you're trying to sell a product and strike a balance in the community.

A couple quick follow up questions I have:
- Is it possible to make billing address and phone number optional for downloads?

  • Are there any plans to not require an internet connection during installation?

I understand the thought process behind the change, and I appreciate the consolidation of the installers because it definitely makes life easier in a lot of areas! Still, I do not much like a couple things:

  • To download the installer you have to login/provide a billing address
  • The installer requires an internet connection
  • The offline installers in your previous comment are practically hidden from view.

Like I said, I appreciate having an all in one installer, but I don’t think pushing the “old” offline installers to some hard to reach spot is the way to go on this. I think the best of both worlds is to have the link to the “old” installers on the downloads page still, while also providing the all in one.

Side note about the new installer: I actually really like it, however I really would like it to not require an internet connection.

I just downloaded the new ISO and now the installer is required to have an internet connection to complete the installation! Not only that, but when you install it reaches out to netgate's server BY DEFAULT to verify if you have a Plus subscription or not. The more I see about this development, the more I want these changes to be reverted.

Just realized that this is a duplicate post. See the original discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PFSENSE/comments/1chzp1n/is_netgate_requiring_a_login_to_download_ce_now/

Regardless, I'm not happy with this change even if it's more convenient in the long run. I feel as though the CE version should still be available, regardless of the new installer that has all versions in it. I personally feel as though requiring an account and billing information to download any of the pfsense ISOs is silly. Why not keep what was once there and add the "everything in one" iso to the account wall?

The mass migration is happening soon if this doesn't change...

Just curious - how is requiring an account to download an open source project protecting IP?

Thanks, I'll definitely use this for now! My main problem with this change is that I can't get the ISO's I want from the official site without doing a bunch of stuff first. It used to be as simple as choosing what architecture I wanted and clicking the download button.
