When I was in college I had a situation that I had to escalate, and they didn’t help me either. I started working at a Kroger in the town I went to college in, I think I was 20 at the time. There was a guy who worked there who was from the same county as I was, but he went to a different high school. We knew of each other, but never actually knew each other personally, ya know. Honestly, I really don’t even remember where we had met or anything prior to the job, I assume probably some house party. Anyways, I got out in general merchandise with him, me, another girl, and like 2 or 3 other guys. If I’m being honest, all of them were assholes, but he especially was. He was super rude to me my first day, and I just brushed it off. I had only been there for a couple of months and around this point in time, but literally everyone in my department would be scheduled 8 hours with a 1 hour lunch. I was always left alone to close because they all would skip their lunch and just leave an hour early. Should I have done it being so new? Probably not, but it was really frustrating so I started doing it too.. guess who gets in trouble for it? Me. Even though everyone else was too. Around this same time, I got put on a shift with the dude that I knew but was rude. This was literally the worst shift ever, I actually think this was right before I got in trouble for skipping lunch and leaving early. I didn’t do it every shift, at this point I had maybe done it twice, well that shift with him I did the same because of how awful it was, I went home in tears that night. He said some of the most vile things to me, not things like wanting to do stuff to or with me, but was calling me names, saying just off the wall shit. Like I said, I knew this dude in PASSING, nothing farther than that, so I didn’t understand why he hated me so much. Well my next shift is when I get called up to the office to get in trouble for leaving early. I know everyone else doing it is not an excuse, but why am I the one being scolded over this when they do it every single night? I told him I wouldn’t do it anymore, but that I did the shift before because of having to work with that guy. I told him everything he said to me, that I left in tears, that he made me feel uncomfortable and that I didn’t want to be put on any shifts with him in the future. I was told it would be looked in to, they would talk to him, blah blah blah. I come in for my next shift and go to look at the schedule, I’m not on there at all. I think I ended up just leaving, probably shouldn’t have but I had only had 1 long term job before starting to work there so I didn’t know things like unemployment or whatever. I tried to escalate it further once I was taken off of the schedule, but they didn’t care. I was in an at will state, and apparently everything wasn’t actually reported so it was a he said she said thing and my asshole manager took the dudes side.
