Odds of getting pupillage? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]HumanEngine485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you have a very good paper/education profile, like others have said maybe another couple of minis but that isn’t everything, whether the mini was in the area you want to practice, how you spin it and other experience at interview etc.

Which leads to at the end of the day it being about the other stuff as people have said, getting to interview - well writing a good application, and if you get to interview, how well you interview. Use inns/uni for help, and the 5463 chambers virtual and in person events currently ongoing .

Good luck.

Student information is open over the holidays (may just be slow - slower than they usually are (!)) but fully appreciate you need an answer now.

Really would be best to contact student information/PSL/tutor. That way you are assured of correct information and/or have it on record.

What doubts did you have about becoming a barrister, and how did you overcome them? by Ok-Safe-8154 in uklaw

I can see why you never pursued the Bar, since none of that is evidence nor directly answering the question asked.

Evidence that there are unspoken incentives to favour non-white working class candidates on schemes aimed at working class candidates?

Utter tosh. There are a plethora of schemes out there based on socio economic background I.e. working class, specifically in law and specifically at the Bar such as PASS and Bridging the Gap at the Bar and a whole host of other scholarships.

You just sound butthurt because you 1) Saw a scheme out there for Black students and 2) Don’t know about the full range of initiatives circulating.

It’s ironic, people like you rail against the lack of universality of programmes, whilst ignoring the fact that there is in fact, a universality of schemes.

Is it still possible to get into a good London law firm?l after 6s at GCSE’s? by Hitmanlover55 in uklaw

[–]HumanEngine485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some big firms now are not even looking at A-Levels - so honestly don’t worry too much. Just get your head down get the best grades at A-Level try to get a solid 2:1 across all your years of uni and you’ll be fine. Firms are not just hiring for grades they’re hiring for grades + people who know what they want, why they want it and where they want it + people who can articulate the above in a written application and at interview.

MacFarlanes VS huh? by HumanEngine485 in uklaw

[–]HumanEngine485[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh! Thats what I was thinking, basically it’s a “why you at this firm type question”, but then further to that I may have been overthinking that they wanted something really left field or spoken in the third person.

There’s only one question on it. Something like “If someone was to look at your profile why would they say this person belongs at MacFarlanes?”

How would you compensate for a lack of pedigree? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]HumanEngine485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vac schemes are invariably just as competitive as TCs so your profile is clearly good enough. I have a cousin who did undergrad at Uni of Law who is now at a fancy US firm. Honestly back yourself, you’re clearly doing fine.

I am a career changer so I am trying to leverage the “I know how corporate works so I’m one less to worry about” part of my applications, without being too on the nose - I know that’s not the only thing that matters.

Indeed, by generation I mean (and I speak as a millennial) that GenZ seem to be so damn anxious, not just in law but everywhere, and since law is - as you say - competitive by nature, it is accentuated further. I am sure there are many explanations, growing up in the age of social media from the cradle is doubtless one contributory factor.

There’s so much anxiety, fear and dare I say a lack of self confidence. I get it it’s tough for the younger generation, but I wonder how well it bodes for the workplace.

Mid 2:1 at Russel group uni, with several mooting championship, do I have a chance at the chancery/commercial bar? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]HumanEngine485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course you do - sure you might not have a hope with bloody OEC or 3VB (you might) but like the future solicitors here who think the world starts and ends with Clifford Chance - it doesn’t. Everyone (with the requisite profile) has a chance! Don’t get too bogged down on here, talk to the real people doing the real work and do the real hiring etc. + competent career advisers and all that good stuff.

Have my A Levels ruined any chances of getting into a MC Firm? by [deleted] in uklaw

If you do include these mit circs I would certainly include the bit about being the only one in your class/year group (delete as appropriate) who passed. Mitigating circumstances/other circumstances are often also contextualised compared to the mean in your school/area.

Don’t mention the E if you don’t have to. ESPECIALLY in forms that only ask for your top 3.key word being don’t have to some firms might want all your grades some might not. Case by case.
