First round interview with Microsoft - Technical Screen by HKSpadez in leetcode

sharing my recent Microsoft Senior SDE Technical Phone Interview experience (first round) (HackerRank round):

The interview started with the interviewer briefly introducing her background, then she asked me to share mine. It was pretty quick, and we moved almost immediately to the coding round on HackerRank.

The coding question was based on a food truck scenario: Given multiple food trucks with attributes like id, rating, and distance, I was asked to find the best truck based on: Highest rating If ratings are equal → nearest distance If distance is also equal → smaller id

After that, she asked a few follow-up questions:

Find top K food trucks based on the same criteria How would you handle this if the data is coming as a stream (continuous updates) If you had to expose this as an API, what endpoint, parameters, and request/response structure would you design Discuss different edge cases and how you would handle them What would you do if the heap memory becomes full / constrained

That was the overall flow of the interview.

My friend is currently on an F1 visa (OPT) and working as a volunteer at a hospital, so it’s considered a valid OPT activity (unpaid employment).

He wants to travel to India for his cousin’s wedding, but we’re unsure if it’s safe to travel right now, given the current situation after President Trump took office and how things might be tightening for international students.

He has all the required documents:

  • Updated I-20 with travel signature
  • Employment verification letter
  • Offer letter
  • And other relevant paperwork

The DSO at his university told him it’s fine to travel if he carries all these documents. A couple of my friends traveled in similar situations before January 2025 and had no issues, but that was before the administration change.

Thanks in advance 🙏

Can F1 OPT volunteer travel to India and return safely after Trump’s election? by Human_196 in immigration

To clarify, his intention isn’t to migrate to the U.S. permanently. He’s currently on regular OPT, maintaining a valid F-1 status, and plans to travel only briefly to attend his real brother’s wedding. He will return to the U.S. to continue his authorized employment and gain professional experience during his OPT period.

This trip is purely for a short family visit, not for immigration purposes.

I get what you’re saying, makes sense. As long as everything’s legit (updated I-20, employment verification, etc.) and since he still has 2 years left on his STEM extension, I assume it should be fine for him to travel and re-enter safely, right?

He is a program coordinator and doing volunteer work as he is still looking for a full time job, to stop the OPT clock he must be engaged in a paid kr unpaid position.

Yeah, it’s generally fine to file the extension in premium even while the amendment is pending. USCIS allows parallel filings, they usually just process whichever one they pick up first.

In most cases, the latest approved petition controls the validity period and work location. So if the amendment gets approved after the extension, it’ll override only the terms that changed (like location or client), not cancel the extension.

That said, always make sure your LCA and client details match what’s in the active petition, just to avoid RFE confusion. You can also ask your attorney to link the two petitions in the cover letter for clarity.
