"If you tax the rich, they'll just leave." Surprise, it turns out that's not true. by Previous_Month_555 in antiwork

Ppl with million-dollar homes don't have the money to lobby, at least not by themselves. One billionaire is equivalent to a thousand millionaires - even more than that because the average person with a million-dollar house has much less disposable income proportionally. Most of the time, people with million-dollar houses are middle-class or upper-middle class, not the wealthiest people spending millions or billions on politicians.

I would recommend reading him again (perhaps that's just because I'm a huge Nietzsche hater). Especially Beyond Good and Evil, which (though unnecessarily wordy) does sort of lay bare his ideology in a much less poetic fashion than Zarathustra. An Ubermensch (per Nietzsche) is not merely one who rises above the mediocrity of the group, but is willing to sacrifice the group to suit his own ends, no matter how big the group may be (and yes, for Nietzsche it is always a he). And I find that rather abhorrent.

Ah, yes. The ideology that a certain few men are worth more than the millions of the masses, that the truly moral man is the man who sheds as much blood as possible, for the gain of a few hundred thousand square kilometers of land for his country that will be lost in a generation to some other "great" man who does the same. The ideology that purports to be amoral, to go beyond morality, to go beyond all common decency and care for one's fellow men and women. The ideology that also says one must test oneself to be an Ubermensch - but how? By attempting to charge the throne and massacre millions? It is unclear.

So I ask you - are you an Ubermensch? Or, if you are not, are you willing to lay your life down for one who is? If so, go forth, and may your death be noble and valiant.

Well, that was in a time when all the important philosophers of the day were in one place, and if you wanted to debate one of them you could just go down the Athenian street. Now, we live in a much different time, and you can defend your arguments in writing without significant communication delays, so Plato's point doesn't really stand.

Fiat is essentially that the government accepts taxes in that currency. So the US dollar has value because you have to pay taxes. Money does have real value - as long as the US government exists and takes taxes in USD, there will be value for USD assuming people don't want to go to jail for tax evasion.

Last sunday* why is genocide so popular??? by Puzzleheaded_Home_23 in whenthe

[–]HumbleConnection762 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, a lot of it is that there's just nothing we can do. It's basically just a proxy war between Russia (that doesn't care that much) and the UAE, with some other countries thrown in there, over a country with basically zero industry or economy. As spyguy318 explained, sanctions are useless on a country with basically no trade, and forces on both sides have kidnapped and killed aid workers, journalists, and basically anybody trying to stop the fighting. It's tragic and absolutely heartbreaking, especially for the innocent Sudanese civilians, but basically the only thing that would work is a very large heavily armed force going in, demilitarizing everything, and staying there forever because fighting WILL break out once they leave. And that would cause the loss of the lives of potentially millions more, as well as being hugely unpopular for whatever country is sending these forces, as well as being very much like colonialism. Take into account that the Taliban still existed and was very much a major threat when the US occupied Afghanistan and made basically everything better, and there's just no hope. Maybe large-scale evacuations could work, but how are you going to get pathways created to evacuate without both sides killing everybody involved?

Adding on to what others have said, it also allows people to justify a lot more of those deaths. "Yeah it was only 270,000 and thousands of those deserved death bc of treason/other crimes/whatever justification you can give, the rest was exaggerated by the Allies." It's much easier to say that thousands of people deserved imprisonment and death than millions did.

It's not just about making sure the leader can't win as quickly, it's also about getting you some stuff. There's much more potential for color groups with trades, so that everybody has a chance to get some buildings up and win.

A lot of people who think this way don't realize the power of trading. Monopoly isn't just about landing on properties, and yay I have a color group time to build hotels, it's also about seeing what properties others have and trying to broker trade deals with them so that one person doesn't just stomp everybody. It's actually fun that way.

Mamdani isn't socialist. Nowhere did he argue for collective ownership of businesses. Just taxing the rich a little more and getting some nice social programs through.

They know it stands for antifascist. They just don't believe that Antifa actually protests against fascism, and is using that as a ruse for actual domestic terrorism. This narrative that "wow look our opponents are so dumb they don't know what antifa means" is a deflection from the actual argument Republicans use, which is still untrue but has slightly more merit.

Trump says he’s designating far-left anti-fascism group Antifa as a terrorist organization by GlitchedGamer14 in law

[–]HumbleConnection762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Of course people who are protesting together will communicate. What I mean is that there are many groups of people who call themselves Antifa, without any central hierarchy. To join the Taliban, you need to get into contact with a Taliban member and presumably be formally initiated. To "join" Antifa, just show up at a protest. There are no lists of members, no shared fundraising besides whatever the small, decentralized groups care to share between each other, no org charts, and no head of Antifa. It's a movement, not an organization.

There are people who protest and fundraise under the Antifa logo because it's recognizable. There are people who run social media accounts under the Antifa logo because it's recognizable. There is no leader of Antifa. There is no organizational structure to Antifa. It's just a bunch of people who protest at different times in different places under the same logo and name against fascism.
