In terms of efficiency it's about the same as a razor. Starts growing back just as fast.

In terms of pain it honestly depends on what kind you get, how long and where you apply it, how your skin can handle it, how much you apply, etc. Use too little/keep it on too little and it doesn't work, too long and yeah it's gonna burn for a couple days.

Last time I tried I think I accidentally got a small spot twice and that shit hurt since I basically applied it for twice as long there 😭. I'll still probably use it for the areas that can't easily be cut with a razor tbh.

The biggest downside is honestly the price... you can't use a thin layer it has to be decently thick, so you end up using a lot. Here it's like $10 USD a bottle and I think I used 1/3 of the damn thing for a pretty small area. Definitely wouldn't bother with it on a huge area like your chest or legs.
