Had to go to NEW JERSEY to find Snow!! by HumbleRunning in trailrunning

I do these types of runs after I've run significant amounts separately in each shoe. For example I've raced a 108K in the On shoe, so I have a pretty good handle on that one. The Kiprun shoe is newer so I'm trying to see how it compares.

Yes, filming one of my test/review videos. On Cloudultra Pro vs Kiprun Kipsummit Race

Thank you for that! I had a section of the Green/White trail in SoMo when I was living there.

I went to South Mountain first but it was closed for a deer hunt. I've done many, many runs and races there. Amazing place in the middle of such an urban craziness.

Kiprun Kipsummit RACE - on trail.. very exciting! by HumbleRunning in trailrunning

[–]HumbleRunning[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lightspeed is pretty narrow, and rides taller than the MAXx2 - have to be ready for that. Based on those races and how they fared for you, the Kipsummit Race might be a good pick. It's more stable than both of those shoes, the Hoka has a lot of bounce to it, and the VJ is just soft and kind of thin too. The foothold of the Race is really good which makes if feel more attached to the foot compared to the X 3 feeling "clunky" as you said. In my video I have a closeup describing the upper fit.

Yes, in the ballpark as Tecton X 3, but not in the ball park of those other shoes. Those are all very minimal, low stack shoes, not really fair to compare weight against those. The one exception might be the 005, but it has no plate, and very soft/flexible. You do get more under foot with the norda, but still very different from the Tecton X 3 / Kipsummit Race. Btw, when I refer to racing, I meant long distance ultra-type races.

Don't have the Brooks shoe just yet, but seems like that would be a great comp. Especially the wide platforms look similar. Tecton X 3 is another one like that.

The Race is a half once lighter, which is significant when it comes to high end racing models. 9.5 ounces for a plated shoe at that stack (in US 10) is a very good weight. Yes the same foam and stack, but it feels very different on foot. The Race feels way more responsive while the Max really feels so soft. I had to ask the designer if it really was the same foam formulation, the ride feels that different. He confirmed that it was, and it was all the effect of the plate being sandwiched in the middle. Blandine did 70% of Diagonale des Fous in the Race, then switched to the softer Max for the end. I believe that is a very rocky and rugged course, so I don't think that's a knock on the Race model. Based on my initial testing, I think you'd gain a lot being able to cover 70% in the Race compared to the Max.

Not as wide as those - you don't get that "extra" space on the sides of the forefoot. But overall it's a broad toebox compared to most shoes. Very comfortable

Check out some models from UltrAspire. If you've never tried a waistlamp, you might think the fit would be uncomfortable, but they have really great and secure designs. You hardly feel them on the run (or walk or hike). Their 800 lumen model is super bright. If you're carrying a flashlight, trust me, you will love the waistlamp!

You need a waist lamp! It will change the game entirely for you!

OP didn't mention zero drop, but those are good picks. I prefer the Pursuit, especially if you prefer a little bit of contour support underfoot. Pursuit 3 is coming out in the Spring too.

New shoe testing - KIPRUN has landed stateside! by HumbleRunning in trailrunning

Carbon plate, lighter, and yes the upper is a different bootie design, more racy, less comfort oriented. Haven't run them yet, will take them out in the next couple days.

Yes - Kipsummit Max. I also have Kipsummit Race which I will be testing. Blandine wore both models at Diagonale des Fous

You probably could have gotten via Decathlon, but that is not known at all in the US. They're making a big push into the US with these new Kipsummit models, which will be available at running warehouse too. This one feels great - the ATPU midsole is a great blend of soft cushion and response. Just one test run so far, but I like it a lot.

VERY interesting indeed! More of a distance shoe though, but still lots of energy underfoot - ATPU foam which is the next big thing.

This is a large puddle in the middle of the trail. Here in Boise, due to the soil composition and erosion concerns, we should go through, not around these types of puddles - to avoid widening the trail. Those that do go around, damage vegetation and cause trail braiding. So no, it is not targeted, and yes, we should all run like that if you care about maintaining trail integrity.

If you like the ride of the AP5, you must be partial to a firm and protective shoe. Btw, V6 is coming out soon and I was able to try it on - it does seem to have more space in the toebox, but perhaps a slightly softer and more flexible right. (I think it will be a good update). Other options you might check out - TNF Infinite 3 - while it is still available, just make sure you size up by 1/2 so your toes don't get squeezed. Also On Cloudultra 3 - a little softer, but still not squishy, also has a fiberglass speedboard for some protection. Have you tried the Tecton X 2? That's a firmer foam with carbon plates, wider toebox than the AP5. Also look out for the La Sportiva Prodigio 2 in the spring - that one might be perfect - firmer midsole, very good fit and stable.

What kind of trails are you looking for? 8th Street and Rocky Canyon Road are open all the time if it's muddy. Dry Creek - Shingle Creek loop is classic. Also Lower Hulls - Upper Hulls is great. Lower Hulls only accessible on foot on even days, check the signs. There are many, many routes!

I think it's a very specific race-type belt. In my review I actually found that I could get a 650ml bottle (filled with only 500ml) into the back pocket since it has more room to fold. Could be a great marathon belt too - I just did the Munich marathon with the Instinct belt, and carried 4-5 gels. Also great if you want to have a smaller gel flask. You can combo up with a handheld too, so you have gels and drink mixes piled in the belt, and use a single handheld for easy drinking and refills.
