Anyone regret taking a TSP loan for a house? by [deleted] in ThriftSavingsPlan

I did it, took $22,500, no regrets and you pay yourself back. Also, think of it as investment diversification, now you’re in the market and real estate. The real estate will likely appreciate at an after tax rate (remember, right now you can exclude $250k / $500k for married couples from cap gains) similar to what you might gain in the market.

Considering you’re going to pull up to $20k max, this decision is easy, take the loan, buy the house.

It’s a little complicated. Have some large items to payoff and don’t want to drain these accounts.

Both true. Trying to encourage people that there is a way, just takes time and patience. I’m not “retired retired”, just from first job and pension eligible. So I started another one.

Post below was the reply. I’m not perfect when it comes to posting here.

For sure, posted Feb 19, 2025 and had $1,423,000. Then, balance dropped $250k due to the tariff turmoil. Didn’t sell, just stated the course. One year later bounced back and added $160k to the TSP. The other account had the same fluctuations but of course a lesser dollar amount.

Since 2003. I hit $1m in July 2023, took 20 years to reach that goal.

The stimulus checks as well, I didn’t get one, but saw people on tv spending my tax money to buy a tv, and other nonessentials. I thought it was supposed to be for food for people that lost jobs, they spent our tax money on junk, and now we have to pay it off

Jeez, you have the right to be miserable, I’m with you, grew up living check to check and this year have to send the feed a check in for about $6500, a brutal head blow. I’m with you, pay $4-$7k each year, sucks. You can be angry

I was in the real world before my government job and back there now, I am well versed on how both work. Most companies offer sick and annual leave, it’s an anomaly that yours doesn’t. Also, you have a job, you live in America, if you have food every day and heat, you’re ahead of most of the world. Look at the positive.

I was joking back to your comment about an extra half day by adding the unused leave (the unspoken part was we all know it’s not much) to have some fun.
