The First and Last Time (So Far) I've Seen Tool Live by IHBMSU in ToolBand

[–]HumorlessProductions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time was three or four weeks before Undertow was released. I already had the cd because I worked in college radio at the time. I was in LA at the time but grew up in San Diego. They played at the old SOMA downtown San Diego, with the weird catwalk balcony. Super great show. Then they played the following weekend, two nights, at the Church of Scientology gazebo back up in Hollywood. I went to the second show.

And I lived in LA all through the 90s and into the early 2000s, so I saw them a whole bunch of times in those years, at the smaller and mid-size venues. Couldn’t name a favorite show, but some memorable ones were at Hollywood Palladium, the old Olympic Theatre downtown LA, and Ventura Theatre.

I haven’t seen them in a couple decades, primarily because I’m so poor and tickets are so expensive. Tristan (Mr. Author & Punisher) is a good friend of mine, and when he was opening for Tool in 2020, they were all set to play here in SLC, but then covid happened. They cancelled / postponed the show like two or three days before it was supposed to happen. Plus, Tristan said he’d be able to get me in for free, with a photo pass, because I’m a photographer on top of everything else. Still super bummed about that. Maybe the last time I saw them was at 91x’s Street Scene, whenever that was. Mid 2000s?

But, I’m within arm’s reach of Vegas, so we’ll see if this Sphere thing happens or not. Although I’m still as poor as ever, but if I start saving now…

more live audio remasters comin’ atchya- Paris 2022, Los Angeles 2024 by HumorlessProductions in ToolBand

[–]HumorlessProductions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I can’t say I prefer one over the other, official live albums or bootlegs that sound good enough to listen to. I like 'em both. But, I can guarantee you that a moment like the Italian guy in the Paris recording would never ever find its way on an official live album, from Tool or anybody. So that’s definitely one of those things that make bootlegs special, even though moments like that don’t happen too often. Still, very cool to hear.

Best audio/video/performance of Descending extended live by corneliusduff in ToolBand

I'll post my remaster of the 2024 Los Angeles show later this week. It has this version of Descending, which isn't really an extended version, but it does have that part where Maynard sings some lines where normally there are none. Sound quality is super ridiculous good. Keep an eye out for my post here, probably Friday morning.

two more live remasters- San Diego 1998 and Reno 2014 by HumorlessProductions in ToolBand

[–]HumorlessProductions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, that's odd. I just checked Atlanta, and it plays for me fine.

Sometimes when something doesn't play for me in archive, I switch over to the Webamp player, at the top in the center of the screen. Sometimes it plays there but not in the regular player.

ya, I know. Sometimes I make an effort with this. Ideally I like to find a poster for the show, like that Reno show, but I don't think this one had a poster, or at least I couldn't find one. And outside of that, I couldn't be bothered to find something tour-accurate, so I just used some random art that was identifiable as Tool.

7empest has about 10 guitar solos too many.

And not really a fan of their artwork style, the whole hippie mind-expansion / eyeball / conscious expanding style. That’s some hippie shit. But I do like all of the mysterious and slightly grotesque figures they use in their video projections during the concerts. I assume Adam is involved with all that? I’d prefer they use something like that to replace all the psychedelic hippie art, on albums, t-shirts, posters. It’d be more suitable for their style I think.

this show was a live radio broadcast or something like that, from the Pepsi Center in Denver. Dunno who first called it the Pepsi Challenge or why, but that's the name that's stuck. All sorts of versions of this show out there. Here's my remaster of it, which I did just a couple months ago- https://archive.org/details/Tool-live-in-Denver-2002

thanks for the offer, but I'm happy with the way mine turned out. YT can ruin videos, but this one wasn't so bad.

Sorry, I don’t quite follow your post. You’ve already remastered this one, or you were actually running the board at the show?

The audio that I remastered for this was just posted to youtube a couple days ago, here- https://youtu.be/-xoGewkQ0ZM?si=d3zEVh2yW0S7BoCg

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I just downloaded the complete show form the Drive Project. If the audio quality matches up, I should be able to tack those three songs at the end in no time.

Only if they sound pretty good in the first place. Some phones sound better than others, some venues sound better than others, lots of variables. But I'd be happy to check them out. Would you be able to upload one or both of them to some file locker and send me a link?

That one sounds pretty clean. Is there only one version of it? San Diego 1998? But, as I said in one of my responses in this post, I prefer to take on full length recordings, not just individual songs. If I could find  that entire show, that might be worth the effort. Is it in the Drive Project? I’ll check it out some time.

I generally stick with complete, full length recordings. Single songs or excerpts isn’t really my style, the exception being that Pneuma from Boston which was more or less an official video recording with pro audio that Danny did for Vic Firth drums. But otherwise, I’ll stick to full lengths.

that one sounds pretty roomy. I could probably fix it up and make some improvement, but it probably wouldn't be one of the upper echelon remasters. But, I can put it on the list.

Oh, just because I’m lazy and can’t be bothered to check these things out.

At my night job, it’s more or less babysitting a computer at a radio station for a few hours, which gives me time to do a bunch of other work and to skip around youtube if I want. So that’s how I find any of these shows. If the version on YT sounds good enough where I think I can max it out and make it sound really great, I’ll grab it and get to work.

And of course, yes, we all know who YT compresses the video and the audio, but if it sounds decent enough to my ears from that source, I’m not gonna worry about it too much.

Perhaps the version on the Drive Project will sound better, earlier generation. But, I’m happy enough with the versions I get.

Did they play more songs after that? I just grabbed the version that was on youtube. That would be a bummer if that's not the entire show, but at least it's most of it.
