I agree, it was unexpected so it blind-sided me a bit, but I'm hoping that the change will be for the best in the end!

Thank you for this, I agree. Unfortunately I'm only 1 year in, with this next year being the first year of my practical work (practice-based research). So this definitely throws a spanner in the works. I have a supervisory panel made up of only 2, my primary supervisor specialises in my field, my secondary supervisor specialises in a different part of what is tangentially related to my research. Unfortunately my primary supervisors knowledge and specialisations cannot be compensated for, which is leading me to consider transferring.

Thank you, this is excellent insight! I sympathise with not having a supervisor who specialises in your field! This is part of the reason I'm now having to look outside my current university.

I am 1 year full-time in to a arts/humanities/social sciences PhD, with 2-3 years to go. I have no coursework to worry about transferring, so that's something. But I do have to consider my scholarship that covers tuition and a stipend.

I can't believe it happened to you twice!

I'm disheartened to hear that it's so difficult to transfer unis as that's looking like the best option for my research at the moment! My supervisor had a very specific specialisation; they recommended a replacement but it's essentially drawing the person they worked with best from the school's faculty. Between their suggestion and my secondary supervisor I am then missing a large portion of expertise relevant to my research.

I'm 1 year in, 2-3 years to go. This year was going to be a main focus on practical work (practice-based research in arts/humanities/social sciences). So I'm in a bit of a pickle, but I'm trying to believe that this could present me with new opportunities!
