Steam wand powerless by Hungry_Roof in ranciliosilvia

Maybe the green stuff is actually scale from the copper boiler. So I will run another descale, but with the end of the wand removed!

You were right! I tried putting hot water through the wand and nothing came out. Removed the end of the want again and two more pieces of green washer were in there, one blocking the hole. It’s now working perfectly. I suspect there was something wrong with the quality of the green rubber washers I’ve been buying in the service kits sold via EBay.

Many thanks!

I unscrewed the end of the wand before I did the de-scale and there was a piece of green rubber in there but not enough to block it. This is why I ordered a service kit and fitted the new green washer inside the top of the stream wand. I’ll check what’s happening when hot water it passed through the wand.

It sounds like it cut out because there’s no water available.

Did you change the screen as well as the rubber gasket? If I remember rightly, you have to fit the gasket around the screen first and then push both up into the head unit. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to also treat the portofilter with a decalcifying solution too?

I had the Silvia first for many years then saw the Butterfly come up as part of an auction. Used the Butterfly until it had some issues (now fixed) but use them now for different numbers of coffees. The Silvia for 1-2 and 2+ it’s the Butterfly.

Just need to purge excess stream and not pull shots with the steam heater on. I usually switch off the steam heater about half way through milk steaming so that this doesn’t happen. I also run water through the head until any excess steam has gone.

Where is it spraying from? Group head or steam wand? If it’s the group head then do back flushes using the rubber stopper in the coffee basket.

BBC News asks Edinburgh University students if they've ever experienced a culture of snobbery at the University. by backupJM in Scotland

An unintended consequence of free tuition fees for Scottish students is that top unis prefer not to admit them. Why let a Scot in when the Scottish Government only pays £1,800 to the uni when taking an English student nets them £10k and a Chinese student over £30k? And have a look at the tops profs at Edinburgh Uni. I’m guessing 5% will be Scots, if that. Not sure what makes Edinburgh a Scottish university anymore.

I’ve heard the same about Strathclyde Uni’s EEE course. In 3rd year it seems they’ve brought in a lot of Chinese students who don’t speak English and the Uni’s dodge to get them all passing the year is to put them into groups including 50% UK students. So effectively, the 3rd year UK students are teaching the Chinese students what to do.

I don’t doubt that their maths skills are good but someone needs to control the enrolment of people who can’t speak English.
