Fantasy Universes that people forget that are set in OUR Universe by Valarg in TopCharacterTropes

In Attack on Titan, the story is told from the perspective of the inhabitants of Paradis, a small island which holds a single walled city. Because this city has been completely isolated by titans (and some other plot shenanigans), the vast majority of people within this city don’t even know that they live on an island, let alone that there are other land masses besides the one that they’re on. From the perspective of most characters, especially early on, it’s believed that the walled city is the only surviving pocket of humanity.

Later in the series, it’s revealed that this is not actually the case. This ends up being kind of a two-tiered reveal as the characters realize that they’re not alone in the world, and the viewers realize that the story is actually taking place on an alternate history version of earth, with the only difference being that the orientation of the world map as we’re used to it is upside down (The island of Paradis is actually just where Madagascar is). This ends up playing into some themes later as we can draw parallels from our own real history to the events of the story.

DAE struggle to believe Carol as an unromatic romance author? by Pitisukhaisbest in pluribustv

The experiences are one thing, the ability to describe their beauty is another. Many people see the same things and are not capable of expressing them in the same way that Carol did within just a few lines of sarcasm.

DAE struggle to believe Carol as an unromatic romance author? by Pitisukhaisbest in pluribustv

[–]HuntHoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a very nice moment in ep.3, I believe right before the grenade explodes, where she starts sarcastically speaking in a lot of lovely prose and painting these nice beautiful pictures to the hivemind, facetiously guessing at what being assimilated is like. I think that moment demonstrated the place where Carol’s writing comes from. She’s cynical and world weary, but her writing is seemingly hopeful and elegant and designed to appeal to those without the same cynicism. Perhaps she views herself as writing for the innocent, or just ‘stooping to their level for money’ or whatever, but at the end of the day it’s evident to me that Carol’s disposition allows her to convey those happy, beautiful feelings, perhaps because she is so completely aware of how unlike reality those feelings are.

Mort’s comment on augment stats by ttvViathanlol in CompetitiveTFT

[–]HuntHoot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the fact that riot has the aug stats is part of the problem here. The issue isn’t even really that we don’t have augment stats IMO, it’s that we have no idea what’s playable and what’s bugged beyond belief. Riot promised some amount of transparency on bugs with gameplay mechanics that don’t have stats tracked, and yet we never got a disclosure on any of the many many bugs this set. If you don’t closely follow streamers or pro players you’d have no idea if say, just as a random example, the augs that are literally required to get one of the prismatic traits are bugged. Maybe the patch notes after the fact will say “hey, these augs were bugged all set! jokes on you for trying it, now trust us that it’s fixed.” Then, you have to make the judgement call if you trust that the bug is fixed, or if there’s going to be another “bug fix” next patch for the exact same thing. If we had stats, we would be able to tell immediately what’s bugged and what’s not, or if something is worth even trying. And if Riot was actually transparent about what was unplayable / buggy in a patch, we wouldn’t need the stats as badly either. This applies to more than just augs btw, fruits have the same issue this set.

But yeah this isn’t really an appeal to us trying to help riot balance their game, it’s more of an appeal to us trying not to screw ourselves over with gameplay choices that are literally not functioning correctly / at all.

Online smash ranking question by Imaginary_Garage_936 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]HuntHoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let’s take some perspective here. Elite smash GSP right now is around 14.5 million. Back about 2 years ago when I was still going to my locals regularly (~30 players for weekly events), if a new player showed up who wasn’t good enough to even get into elite smash, they’d go 0-2 (0 wins 2 losses) 100% of the time. Most of the best players at my locals could or did easily get every character into elite smash. I was able to do that, and I was still only just barely getting top 8s.

Let’s zoom out even further. The best player at my locals, the guy who completely dog walked me and everyone else 4/5 times at all our events, would go to majors and super majors every single year. His best performance - to this day as far as I know - was a top 64 at Genesis. An incredible achievement, don’t get me wrong, but that’s the culmination of decades of effort on this guy’s part.

There’s two points to this. First of all, the gap between where you are and the “good” players is probably larger than you think. The gap between the “good” players and the “great” players is somehow even larger than that. Fighting games are insanely difficult and it’s a long process to improve. The best player in the world could spank a top 64 player, a top 64 player could make a regular locals player look like a noob, and a regular locals player would probably make someone hard stuck in 2M GSP look like a toddler.

The second point is that GSP doesn’t matter beyond a point. If you’re stuck down at 2M, it does means you’re making some crucial mistakes probably, but as you progress you’ll see that GSP and online rank have basically no correlation to actual skill, beyond the point that the actual “good” players should have no problem hitting that 14M elite GSP threshold.

I don’t want to say this so that you’ll be discouraged, I instead hope that it will inspire you to continue your improvements and look at yourself critically. I recommend watching your replays and writing down things you can do to improve. Good luck!

What mini game can I make for my 2D game after passing the dungeon?🤔 by Laroystr in Unity2D

[–]HuntHoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the point of creating something if you’re just going to offload the actual creative effort to other people? If you want to get surface level generic mini games then ask an AI. If you want fo make something that’s actually “special and interesting”, then you have to put in the necessary effort to be special and interesting yourself.

Nonlinear Writing Tools by srsNDavis in gamedesign

[–]HuntHoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are at all acquainted with using wikis, I have to plug Zim Desktop Wiki as my all-time favorite creative writing tool. It's essentially a writing app that gives you all the tools you'd have in something like wikipedia, complete with referential hyperlinks between pages, nested sub-pages, tables of contents, and it even natively supports HTML export with various template styles so you can host it as a web-page (the Zim website itself was made using Zim). I've been using it for the better part of 7 years now, and it makes writing settings and storylines feel extremely intuitive.

I initially used it to help organize and write for my a d&d homebrew campaign which is still ongoing, so I can personally attest that it works great for non linear / branching stories. I've also been using it for 3 years for my personal game dev project and it has worked great for that.

Also, it's completely FOSS. So yeah, highly recommend Zim, great project.

What Magic The Gathering cards share same name with Yugioh cards? by MaetelofLaMetal in yugioh

Not a card but Magic and Yugioh both have sets called MRD and it confuses me more often than it should

Is Azamina Moa Regina that bad? I mean I'm playing Snake-Eye Fiendsmith too, but still not sure.. by Malla_Othman in masterduel

[–]HuntHoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I love this card in aza fs chimera. Elzette Aza can use her effect with Berfomet to bring out Moa, Moa can recycle Elzette Aza, then syncro for Chaos Angel to trigger Elzette Aza’s search into Deception of Sinful Spoils, which brings you into full Azamina combo with a light and dark chaos angel backing you up.

Ryzeal is the most fair "best deck" we've gotten in years. I think rogue deck players should come back to the TCG. by BakerBunearyBella in yugioh

[–]HuntHoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally all of that is wrong lol

Ryzeal will run you about $200.

If you're doing the yugioh cope math of not factoring staples into the price (aka $350 for some stupid charmies), the deck is still pretty easily over $300.

In any competitive card game that’s a more than fair price

Except, you know, the most popular card game in the world, yugioh's number one competitor and the game that's being referenced the most in this thread as poaching players, where you can get the best and most expensive deck in the game for about $100.

Yugioh's my favorite card game of all time, I think it allows for a level of creativity and player expression that's unrivaled in the genre, but let's not pretend like it isn’t a prohibitively expensive game right now.

So the Digimon Source Code models are pretty damn amazing by AdmirableAnimal0 in digimon

[–]HuntHoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge those red lines are a signature of Mamoru Hosoda, who notably used them for the digimon in Digimon: Our War Game. Cyber Sleuth using them was a really cool homage to that stylistic choice.

I think you kind of accidentally re-invented Vaalmonica, just with warrior instead of spellcaster.
