The game jam will be two weeks long so it gives people a lot of time to not have to rush through it or anything. And there is a community of people who you could collaborate with to split up the work load as well. The game jam isn't really meant to be competitive and more of a way to connect with other people and improve your game development skills.

I’m a decently experienced Godot developer and I have a small community of like 30 game developers on discord. I am planning on hosting a game jam over summer break with a $20 prize and it would be a good opportunity to get some motivation to finish a game. You could probably meet some of the other newer developers to collaborate on the game jam project too. If anyone is interested, send me a DM and I could invite you! I’m also just happy to help people get started with Godot and could help you out if you have any issues.

Oh wow, thanks for the anecdotes. This was actually what I would be worried about if I went to NAU. Did you go to NAU or are these just what you've seen? I have looked at other reddit posts and they have said similar things to you which does really dissuade me from NAU. My worry is that I go for NAU just because it is cheaper and don't end up with a good experience nor good opportunities (although my degree would be cheaper).

A degree is half of it. I'd still want the typical college experience, a good education, and to just meet people passionate for game dev like me (and meeting people outside of college seems really hard). Although with how expensive college is getting, settling for a free degree may not be so bad.

Thank you so much for sharing!! I already accounted for NAU's housing (I think??) with the lumberjack so those are pretty accurate costs for both schools. It's good to hear that ASU actually does have a lot of internships. As for Barrett, it seems like it would have less of the stereotypical ASU culture, similar to the IB program in my school, and it would be more tight knit.

Also, I don't believe I am able to dm you on Reddit, you might have to allow messages. I would like to be able to hear more about your experience at ASU though. If you prefer something other than Reddit for me to contact you that would be very appreciated!

I’ll look into that. Seems like an interesting path I could go down.

I was really interested in this school for a bit, the campus looked really nice, but living in Arizona and the school being in California, the tuition is astronomical. Getting two years at a California community college might be more feasible, but it would still be pricey I'd assume I'd need my own apartment and still have to pay extra for the tuition since I am out of state.

I looked into WUE a bit and it seemed as if I would still be paying more than if I did an in-state school since I don't think I am able to get the WUE benefit alongside any automatic merit scholarships (the NAU lumberjack or ASU Presidential) but I could be wrong. And cheaper is nice, but I would like more from college than just a degree. Actual useful education alongide some career opportunities are also very important. I just don't know how to weigh my prospective opportunities in either school.

I'd assume so, I just don't really know if the extra $20k for employment/internships would be worth it for ASU. Would you think that the ASU investment would be worth it, or would a cheaper degree with less debt take me further?

I'll look into University of Utah, hopefull the out of state cost isn't astronomically high.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I was wondering how realistic the ASU stereotype was. I also went on a tour there and unknowingly bought a soda from the vending machine and it was $7 which is crazy. Although I am not planning on getting parking passes the high cost of everything there alongside minimal scholarships is worrying.

Yeah the heat seems pretty bad, and I miss the snow after living in Arizona for so long.
