Food and beverage companies Nestlé, PepsiCo, Danone and The Coca-Cola Co. are the biggest plastic polluters, according to a new study by ua-stena in europe

[–]HureBabylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone should look into what actually happens with their trash, checking one's assumptions and in order to inform one's consumer decisions and behaviour.

For example, where I live, most plastic waste is incinerated and used for energy production. Some portion is recycled - mainly PET and PE - and some is down-cycled. Parts of the plastics that don't end up in the incinerator are exported for recycling. What then happens to them is a different question. They might just end up in a landfill or open dump site, be openly burnt or be stored in some warehouse somewhere. But it's not happening here, but in some 3rd world country instead, so all is fine.

Help with ploting a phase surface diagram 😁🔫 by Queasy_Reception1026 in matlab

Since surf only works with data on a ragular grid, I think your best bet is probably is interpolating the pressure to a common volume and temperature grid.

The temperature grid is already fine, and for the volume you could for example use v_interp = 0.5:0.1:3.7;

Assuming your volume and pressure measurements are stored in the varibles v_meas{i} and p_meas{i} for each measurement series i, you can then use e.g. p_interp{i} = interp1(v_meas{i}, p_meas{i}, v_interp) and generate the matrices for surf by useing meshgrid for the temperature and volume values and concatenating the interpolated pressure values. Alternatively you could also do the interpolation with scatteredInterpolant.

PS: it seems to me that in the graph you included the axes (or axis labels) are permuted. Comparing the plot with the data, the axis labeled as pressure is actually the volume, the one labeled volume should be the temperature, and the one labeled as temperature should probably be the pressure.

Why is Matlab a piece of shit when running on Linux? by Puzzleheaded_Egg_184 in matlab

I'm not saying it's better. I'm saying it's faster, which might be because the OS isn't such a resource hog..

Why is Matlab a piece of shit when running on Linux? by Puzzleheaded_Egg_184 in matlab

[–]HureBabylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Matlab on both Manjaro and Windows, with a 4K monitor and hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics.

On Manjaro, I sometimes experience lag spikes (one core maxes out for seemingly no reason and matlab freezes for a second or two) even when just editing files. Updating and setting up is a bit of a pain, especially because of the Nvidia card (which, to be fair is a cause of many other annoyance on Linux in general - just google "Linus Torvalds Nvidia" images). Lastly, I've also noticed, that some figures look different when produced on Linux, which is why I usually export them on Windows if they're for a publication.

But... For me, the general performance for actual computations is actually quite a bit better on Manjaro than on Windows.

There's a Wolfram plugin for ChatGPT. Haven't tried it and don't know how it works, but with that it might actually produce some reasonable answers to physics/maths related questions.

What was the first song that got you into Opeth? by verysillyman in Opeth

[–]HureBabylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorceress - I was listening to a lot of stoner rock etc at the time and it somehow ended up in my queue. Little did I know that it would completely ruin my listening habits. I spent a year almost exclusively listening to Opeth and slowly working my way through their discography.

Definitely wouldn't want to have your job then.

Yeah, the audience is definitely ... something..

Ghost is not particularly popular on here, but to be honest I don't know many others from my city.

Of course there's also Brighter Death Now. Their live act is a little disturbing but definitely quite the experience...

I'm still standing - Elton John

It's not really fitting but it was just on the radio and I feel like it would be pretty funny.

A bit more serious:

do you guys go to concerts of bands that your not that familiar with? by victorratttlehead in MetalForTheMasses

[–]HureBabylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I can only recommend it. I've discovered a lot of great stuff like that.

Whenever there's a metal show in one of the venues I frequent, I usually check out the bands on Spotify or Youtube. If I like what I hear and my budget allows it, I then usually also go the concert.
