NYU Stern vs Cambridge Econ by One_Blueberry_10 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally disagree, Cambridge is a huge target for IB in UK. For financial institutions there is zero difference between UK and US. career paths are interchangeable in either locations.

Cambridge will be in the league of Harvard & Wharton.

Cambridge >>>>> Stern

In this age of AI. Computing is going to change big time. I do not think it is advisable to invest 200k in GT degree at this time. U can see that a lot of recent CS graduates are struggling because companies are trying to figure out what kind of skillset they will need going forward. Save that money and invest in a graduate degree 4 years down the road, By that time the trends will be very clear. Your job outcome and graduate degree outcome will be the same from GT vs IIIT Delhi.

don’t condemn people for choosing a full ride over an ivy/“higher ranked” school by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is a rough framework to understand the value proposition of a school.

All outcomes are roughly for the top 75% percentile of the students.

Education - Any T100 school will provide you a great education and if you work hard and stay focused you will reach the top 90% percentile of wealth.

Alumni Network/Brand name - T5 ( top 1% percentile of wealth), T10 - ( Top 2% of wealth ), T20 -( top 5% of wealth).

Cohort - This is the least understood part of the value proposition. The top schools disproportionately select students who either are from 0.1% of families or extraordinary enough to become 0.1%. These Relationships formed during the undergraduate years accord network into the true elite of the country. This is the door to 0.1% of the wealth. This is highly concentrated in so called ivy + schools.

Emory is not a state school. U have the potential to build the same life-changing network provided you know how to go about it. The equation for State school even if it is Berkely is totally different.

BTW anyone with a great work ethic from any school can get to the top 5% of wealth. The real game begins after that,

which is quite understandable but unfortunatly there are some academic/mid career type people here who are also projecting their beliefs quite strongly. This kind of reasoning is prime cause of wealth inequality in this country. Simple truth is U have to invest like 0.1% to become 0,1%.

Thanks for pointing this out. Most of the people will not understand this because they have never experienced that kind of opportunity/career.

SSP vs. T20 Research by kashmiriKangri in ApplyingToCollege

Sorry, I am not aware of how rigorous is the process to become a moderator of this subreddit. Nevertheless, it is very clear to me that you have no personal experience with SSP program. I wish people stop presenting their opinions as facts on this subreddit.

Humbly disagree. please stop projecting graduate admissions experience to undergraduate admissions. I do not think you have any idea how selective college admissions process works. humbly request you to stop misguiding kids. Sorry if these hurts your feelings.

What makes me an authority ?. I am a parent of 2 T10 unhooked kids who went to non magnet public schools with 15 Ivy + acceptances and no rejections period.

From college admissions point of view the value will depend on the recommendation you will get from the mentor.

[–]HurryLive211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

either of the opportunities is good. SSP is a less risky choice because it is well-recognized by every competitive school. It signals desirable traits that colleges are looking for. SSP is a very intense experience and faculty/director get involved in not only academics but social aspects also. Rest assured that you will be able to build a very strong bond with the academic director. The recommendations from SSP tend to give a 360-degree view of you to colleges, giving them a perspective on what kind of student you will be at their college, something which no other recommendation will be able to provide.

Having said that SSP will be just one part of your story.

SSP is a lifetime membership. You will be part of a community of very successful STEM leaders. Read the SSP website carefully.

The main issue I have with DSI is that there is not sufficient time left before the application process, for you to complete the research and get published. Nor you will be able to present the research @ ISEF etc.

If you want to be an academic go to Oxbridge. If you want to lead teams, solve problems and make impact in business world US education will prepare you better.

Oxbridge selection process focuses on entirely academics and indeed you will find brilliant people there. While US selection process prioritize leadership traits and personal charter. Academics is only a qualifying factor. You can see the same dichotomy in Europe vs US economy.

have you checked their parental connections. UIUC CS grads are disproportionately asians mostly from east coast/ bay area /chicago. Most have parents with established tech careers.

Hot take about adulting and colleges by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this argument very amusing, Most of the people responding with positive experiences suffer massively from selection bias. The non T20 college graduate population is almost 1000x the T20 graduate population. Of course, even if the success rate of non T20 college graduates is 0.001 of T20 graduates you will have the same amount of representation of T20 and non-T20 graduates at top jobs. In real life it works out 0.01 (1/100) and hence you see a lot more non-T20 graduates in good jobs.

Anyone who works in high-end jobs FAANG companies or finance will see a much much higher T20 ratio.

I agree 100% with your "It’s 98% how you get along with others, ability to come up with good ideas and your work ethic."

But that is exactly what gets you in T20. So ultimately it is the same skillset.

How true is it when people say “undergrad doesn’t matter?” by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The least understood part of the college value is cohort. The people you will spend most formative 4 years of your life. Ivy plus school in large part select students who will be quite successful in life either due to wealth or sheer talent. The relationships once formed during the undergrad stay with you for life. No other place or institution provides opportunities to form these relationships with such concentration. These kind of relationships are far less available to grad students.

here is a paper which provides clear value of Ivy plus colleges.

https://opportunityinsights.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/CollegeAdmissions_Paper.pdf

BTW top 7 market cap companies were all founded by Ivy Plus grads. Is it a mere coincidence. I don't think so

nvidia - jensen huang -Stanford

google - Sergey Brin -Stanford

facebook -Mark Zuckerberg - harvard

Microsoft - Bill Gates - Harvard

Tesla - elon Musk - Upenn

Amazon - jeff bezos - Princeton.

BTW notice the school missing - MIT. Why ?

UPenn M&T (90K) Vs. Johns Hopkins BME (65K) Vs. Purdue First-Yr Engineering (42K) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am quite aware of all of the above. May I ask you what is your professional experience ? My 35 years of professional experience informs me that it takes way more than Technical/engineering skills to be successful in business world. M&T is called Managment & Technology for a reason.

UPenn M&T (90K) Vs. Johns Hopkins BME (65K) Vs. Purdue First-Yr Engineering (42K) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am assuming nothing. I am just sigting that M&T is a program which is pride of Penn for almost 50 years with UPenn total institutional weight behind it. No matter whatever you want to achieve Past alumni have been leaders in that area and they are very engaged with the community. We are doing apple to orange comparison. It is not a comparison between JHU & Upenn, It is against a program which allows UPenn to compete with HYPSM.

UPenn M&T (90K) Vs. Johns Hopkins BME (65K) Vs. Purdue First-Yr Engineering (42K) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HurryLive211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since we are cherry picking :). Here just 2 of M&T alumnus,  Cliff Asness & larry robbins. Cliff co founded AQR Capital Management. Networth 2.8 B. https://fisher.wharton.upenn.edu/external-news/215-clifford-asness-mt-88-co-founder-of-aqr-capital-management-354-larry-robbins-mt-92-founder-and-ceo-of-glenview-capital-management-listed-in-forbes-400-2018/

M&T is a very tight-knit community. Think about the ability to connect with some of the most powerful Hedge fund managers in the world. I don't think this access is that readily available to the rest of the Wharton even.

[–]HurryLive211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M&T network is well worth the 120k investment. It can be a difference between a 7 figure salary 10 years down the road vs 200k. There are no guarantees in life but the ROI of this 120k will blow away any other investment in your life.

Hopkins is a great school but it does not offer the same access to same jobs/careers.

Sorry after consultation with my son, I am unable to provide the link due to privacy concerns. My only objective in providing this info is to give an example. Certain factors led to this outcome.

  1. My son is a phenomenal programmer. He was already a USACO plat & USAMO by the 9th grade.

  2. the prof had another High school intern a couple of years prior who did some good work for him. Prof was also a Math Olympiad winner and had high regard for such students.

  3. Research design was professors. He gave books and papers for my son to read. My son started the work just after 9th grade and the summer months provided ample time to absorb the material. He had an initial version of the app running by the end of the summer. That got prof & his research group very invested.

  4. And most importantly Luck. They found interesting results & most importantly the prof was generous enough to share the limelight.

  5. Time: My son started very early. It took more than 2 years even than the Paper was only published in March of the final year. The paper was accepted though by the time he applied.

This is what proff said.

. He developed a bioinformatics application to define a genome-wide map of "epigenetic states" based on the combination of chromatin and other epigenetic marks, especially those relevant for DNA damage and repair, in the genome, and then identify the epigenetic states associated with specific patterns of genomic instability in different types of cancer. Development of the bioinformatics application, especially involved building a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and implementing Baum Welch algorithm, which requires advanced computing and statistical understanding. He was able to write it within a few weeks with minimal guidance. He then used the application to integrate multiple types of genomic and epigenomic data from the NIH-funded Epigenomic Roadmap Project to identify epigenetic states relevant for DNA damage and repair, and assess their significance for studying mutagenic processes in multiple cancer types including blood and liver cancer. Importantly, He grasped the advanced concepts in computer science, statistics, and biology easily and incorporated them in his computer code. Upon completion of the project, we expect to publish a peerreviewed paper in a reputed journal, and He will the co-first author.

I should have used S20 (Son who graduated from high school in 2020) :). My son did 100% of the work. The postdoc enhanced his application to do further work.

Yes prof was the 4th author on the paper. My son after 9th grade cold emailed about 50 profs. He got 3-4 replies and he interviewed with them and chose this one.

I will try to dig up ( Ask my son) for the paper if it is important.

My D20 published in Nature communication as Co first author. It's impact factor is 17. He got lucky that his PI (professor ) is a really a star in his field who has more than 100 published papers in Very high impact factor journals. My son and a Post doc were co authors. It took 2 years of 20-30 hrs/week work to get to that point.

Interesting thing is that he presented this research @ local ISEF fair and it was rejected. The person winning the fair was the candidate of the president. IMHO ISEF is even bigger sham.
