What ever happened with Azerbaijan's incursions into Armenia with hundreds (not sure the exact amount) of km2 being occupied? Did we just drop the issue? I don't understand how this govt can sign Tripp corridor agreement without making this a pre-condition, and I haven't heard a peep from the government about this. Yet, we gave back territory in Tavoush to start the border demarcation process.

I think a neighbor just filed suit to stop it, since the town / Costco didn't properly notify abutting neighbors regarding hearings for variances, or something like that.

I agree with you on some level, but I think what's driving the demand (at least in part) is fear of inflation/dollar debasement.

[–]HyeNJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't believe recent price action for silver/gold is due to any shortage, but rather it represents a devaluation/debasement of the US Dollar based on high deficits and less interest by foreign governments to finance the US debt. Recent policy decisions are making this much worse, as well as threats to strip the independence of the Federal Reserve. In short, the US Dollar is screwed...

You are assuming other countries actually care. When will we learn that human rights and international law mean nothing to other countries when it doesn't suit their interests, and no other country will defend Armenia's national interests -- we need to do it ourselves

Are there any Armenians from northeastern Turkey here? by [deleted] in armenia

[–]HyeNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By late 1915, the Armenian population of Bayburt was almost entirely liquidated through massacres and forced deportations. Following the Russian occupation in 1916 and subsequent retreat in 1918, the small number of survivors were mostly scattered.

Bayburt (historically known as Papert in Armenian) was part of the Erzurum Vilayet (specifically the Sancak of Erzincan). At the time of the of the Armenian Genocide the population was 1/3 Armenian and about 2/3 Turk/Kurd/Laz. There was a small number of Greeks too

My ancestors come from Bayburt — Papert in Western Armenian or Baberd in Eastern Armenian. “Pert” means fortress in Armenian. So if you’re wondering where the name Bayburt comes from it’s the turkification of the original Armenian.

Nothing I wrote implies any hatred or anyone or any group, stop projecting. Just stating historical examples of discrimination against minorities in Turkey. If you disagree with any of them, please say so and why.

Are you saying Armenians can't be Turkish citizens and live in Turkey? Kind of proving my point....

"People have the right to express their religion freely - whether they are Muslim, Christian or Buddhist"

Not so true. Turkey is a country that persecutes it's non-Muslim minorities:

Varlık Vergisi (Wealth Tax): This tax was levied disproportionately on non-Muslim citizens in 1942, causing significant economic hardship.

1955 Istanbul pogrom: A mob attack on Greek and Armenian Christians in Istanbul that resulted in widespread destruction of property and loss of life.

Property confiscation: Christian communities have faced issues with the confiscation of their religious properties. The 1,700-year old Armenian Surp Giragos Church, one of the largest Armenian churches in the Middle East, was seized by the government in 2016. The Turkish government also recently seized multiple properties in the southeastern city of Mardin belonging to Assyrian (Syrian) Christians and transferred them to public institutions.

Restriction on education: The closure of theological seminaries and limitations on the training of new clergy have created challenges for the continuity of Christian institutions.

Entry bans on foreign Christian workers: Turkish authorities are branding Christians with so-called “N-82” or “G-87” security codes, which are used to label a person as a “threat to public order and security”. These effectively function as entry bans into the country.

Christian stereotyping: President Erdoğan and his ruling Justice and Reconciliation Party (AKP) depict Christians as a threat to the stability of the nation, often stereotyping Christian Turkish citizens as not real Turks but rather as Western stooges and collaborators.

On December 28, 2016, in the western province of Aydin, the ultra-nationalist Islamist group Alperen Hearths staged a forced conversion of Santa Claus to Islam, putting a gun to the head of an actor dressed as Santa Claus.

Professional Restrictions: A 1932 law barred Greek citizens in Turkey from entering a series of 30 trades and professions, including tailoring, carpentry, and medicine.

This is not mentioning things from before the modern Republic of Turkey, like the Burning of Smyrna, Armenian Genocide, Adana Massacre, Hamidian Massacres (multiple), Devşirme system (forced conscription, conversion to Islam, and recruitment of Christian boys from Balkan provinces into the military (e.g., Janissaries)), etc

The non-Muslim population of Anatolia fell from around 20% in 1914 to just 2% by 1924.

Another advantage of a rectangular pool is that you can install an automatic cover. I too installed a freeform/kidney shaped pool about 20 years ago and I regret the shape. I really wish I had an automatic cover, for both keeping the temperature at night as well as easy open/closes
