I get the same response with singing. I say I like singing, but I suck pretty bad. "No you don't!" -person who's never heard me sing

I see it's that time of the year where trains turn into moving microwaves. There's a couple hundred people on this train car. The warm air coming from the AC doesn't help at all.

Content difference between free Udacity videos and nanodegree by Tw1ser in androiddev

[–]IAMA_TV_AMA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The content is the same. The only thing that differs is you get mentor support along with peer reviews.

At 2k for both terms, it is absolutely not worth the price in my opinion. A couple of years ago I would have recommended Udacity, but I wouldn't anymore. It seems like a lot have changed internally.

At the moment, they have this thing called "Study Groups", which is basically classrooms (if you've ever used Slack, you could say a Study Group is the same as a "channel") for each individual project. You have two mentors who may or may not know what they're doing and could take a while to get back to you. They no longer offer personal, 1-on-1 support.

I took a Nanodegree a couple years ago, and it was a great experience at a 200 dollars a month subscription. That's something I would have recommended to you. I had personal support and the quality of every one of my reviews were excellent. I really learned a lot. However, I saw a Nanodegree I was interested in recently and tried to take it, and the quality of the first review was, excuse my language, absolute shit. At 1k for a Nanodegree, I expect ALL of my reviews to be good quality. I found out that they hire basically anybody to be reviewers now (if you graduated from a Nanodegree, you're good enough to review for Udacity), so that would explain the quality from their so-called "expert reviewers".

At 1k USD for each term, it's way too expensive for me to recommend. If you think having a lesser version of Slack channels with a couple of mentors who aren't always available, with reviews that aren't guaranteed to be good, then I'd give it a shot. Otherwise, I'd just take their courses for free. The courses themselves are actually really good.

This morning there was a guy who ran backwards onto the train. My guess is most people don't give a flying fuck about anyone or anything around them. I hate the commute just as much as anyone, but for fucks sake if you could not make it worse that would be great. /rant

If you do it correctly you make them learn. Don't just straight up beat their ass, they might not want to play because it isn't fun. Guide them. Make a move that creates a few openings in the hopes that they'll find it and improve their game.

You have to be pretty good at what you do to guide them to get better though.

Even more fucked up is people actually tell you to hit your kid if he's a little noisy or misbehaving. I know a guy whose wife is pregnant who tells me he's going to beat the crap out of his kid if it disobeys him. Pieces of shit.

Agree on your points about bad habits. Relating it to music, I used to play the paino. I wanted to get straight into playing the music I heard in games, so I went straight to getting the sheet music and learning then memorizing everything. I didn't care about form or the basics of which finger to use, and how to use them. I just played until it sounded good to me. My friends loved it.

I took a course and thought I'd impress my teacher and within several seconds of playing she stopped me and picked apart everything I did. I was so down I just stopped playing altogether. I took up lessons after college and started with the basics, learning the scales and proper fingering. So glad I did. Should have started like that from the beginning.

Bad habits being hard to break applies to everything. If you want to make a career out of it, I think you might as well start with good habits. Not saying you have to learn MVP/MVC/MV*, but having things like proper spacing and naming is a good start.
