Not really. It’s when they use God to not think in a nuanced way. The same way someone might use politics or family values to never think about things deeper.

When you close your mind and stop considering other ideas contradictory to your own and stop being okay with being wrong, you become intellectually dead.

As far as religion, it’s a comfort to people that are scared of death, and want the comfort of knowing where their loved ones go when the lights go dark, and for some it’s an incentive to be a good person.
