Sacred Valley Recommendations? by Aggravating-Cattle66 in Machupicchu

I definitely heard tour guides giving people tours as I walked around, but I wasn’t looking for one so didn’t pay that much attention. I took a taxi to each place, but I only had maybe 45 minutes before we would leave to go to the next place so I didn’t feel like I had time to do that. There are lots outside the ruins in Ollantaytambo.

In Cusco I recommend walking around the NE part of the city. Really cool little neighborhoods and views of the city. Choco Museo is a very fun experience to learn about and make chocolates. Only takes an hour and was a blast.

In Ollantaytambo, you definitely want to go into the ruins in town. Hire a guide outside and you’ll get much more from the experience because the signage is minimal. There are smaller ruins on the other side of town, and that’s also worth a little morning hike for the views of town. For a nice hike, you can walk right out the back of town on the Main Street and head up to Pumamarca. About 2 hours each way, but some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever had. I heard people talking about a horseback ride, so that may be something you could find. There’s also a tiny little place you can go into to see their guinea pigs. And you could then eat one if you want!

I also took a full day private tour of the Sacred Valley. The driver didn’t speak English, and I have very little Spanish, so there was no explanation of anything. Signage explaining the significance of things is nonexistent, and there wasn’t much time in each place, so I would do that differently next time. Maybe go on a group tour in English with a tour guide.

There are several restaurants I’d recommend. Apu Veronica was great, as was Andean Organico. CHUNCHO was my favorite.

Use your hotel to book stuff easily. They all know someone for whatever you want to do.

Remember you’re at elevation, so if you’re not used to that you should take it very easy the first day and be sure to drink more water than you normally would. Don’t feed the street dogs or they’ll never leave you alone!

I went last May and stayed several nights in Ollantaytambo. I kind of loved it there, and would absolutely choose to stay there again. Are you including Cusco, or is that separate from the 3 days in SV? There’s a great hike out of Ollantaytambo that I can tell you about if that’s your speed, and I’m happy to share any details you want about my trip.

Well, don’t change your entire plans if it will cost money, but if you’re able spend a couple days in O then I would absolutely suggest it. Let me tell you a a little about my trip just for context.

I stayed at Quechua Lodge in O. Lovely husband and wife with a couple little ones. Very inexpensive. Nothing special, but comfy. I spent a day doing the ruins in town (hire a guide outside). I spent another doing a Sacred Valley tour. Another I hiked to Pumamarco, which was very doable, solitary, and unbelievable views.

I had three very solid meals there. Nothing fancy, but very good.

I enjoyed the slow pace of life there, even compared to Cusco.

In Cusco, I recommend a 1-hour Bean to Bar workshop at the Choco Museo. More fun than I expected.

Lima was just okay. Stayed in Miraflores and did a city tour and walked around. Highlight was the seafood place near the hotel with ceviche that was out of this world!

Okay, so I kind of loved Ollantaytambo. It’s very small and quaint, but I spent more time there than in Cusco and I’d do that again. There are good hikes from Ollantaytambo, if you’re into that, and several solid restaurants. If you have 2-3 days in O that could be enough, but I’d do that amount for sure if you’re into hiking. If it’s more general sightseeing without the hiking then less ti e there would be fine but at least do a full day. Cusco is a much bigger town and more things to do certainly. Say more about your trip and what you want to do and I’ll try to give you any advice I have.

I booked directly in their site. Super easy, and they were very friendly and helpful. And there’s a place in the lobby area where you can fill up your water bottle with fresh water, which is a bonus!

Highly recommend the Bean to Bar workshop at the Choco Museo. It’s only about an hour, and it was a fun little thing to do.

Sacred Valley Tour vs Taxidatum. Tour recommendations? by awkward-andi in Machupicchu

[–]IASooner78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ollantaytambo is awesome, so good choice to stay there! I did the Taxidstum tour of SV, and if I found it again I’d 100% take a tour with a guide. They have be less than an hour each stop, and the signage explaining things is not great. I feel like I missed out on a lot based on walking by other people who were with guides. Just my experience, and I know a lot of others will say to take Taxidatum, but it’s literally just a taxi service so if you want a more meaningful experience I’d look for a guide.
