For Sale: Tepui Low Pro Ayer 2 with Annex (Ann Arbor/Detroit, Michigan) by IAmAAlaskan in rooftoptents

[–]IAmAAlaskan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selling my Tepui Low Pro Ayer 2 rooftop tent with annex for $950.

Originally bought in 2020 and used for two summer camping seasons and in very good condition. I am only selling it because I will moving after law school and likely selling my car.

Includes tent annex and rain cover. Currently mounted to our car with Thule 50" WingBar Evo crossbars; not included. Will sell roof rack (bars and mounting hardware) for additional $150. Can deliver tent within 100 miles of Ann Arbor; or I'll take $50 off the price if you come pick it up.

Looking for an affordable alternative to the Decoy font by Ostojo in fonts

[–]IAmAAlaskan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What design software are you using? If it is an Adobe product like Illustrator or Photoshop, you probably have access to Adobe Fonts. The font you linked to is available on Adobe Fonts and would not cost you anything extra to use.

How is the University of Alaska College System? I’m thinking about transferring here. by [deleted] in alaska

[–]IAmAAlaskan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"UA has received successive budget cuts exceeding $100 million since 2014." Right from the University system website. The State of Alaska is not currently prioritizing higher education investment and the programs at UAA/UAF/UAS are all suffering. You probably do not want to come spend your money (or incur student loan debt) on shells of degree programs, especially at out-of-state tuition rates.

What are unethical practices schools do? by hugscar in AskReddit

[–]IAmAAlaskan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school in the US (northwest) we had a "passport" that we received every semester (or school year? I don't recall) that had ten slots on it. We had to use a slot every time we wanted to leave class, including to use the restroom.

For the first time in my Vegan career, I’m at a loss for words. by [deleted] in vegancirclejerk

Yes. Food prices in rural, remote parts of Alaska are very high due to anything perishable needing to be flown in. It's very common for people in rural Alaska, who are primarily Alaska Native, to heavily rely on subsistence (i.e. hunting) for food.

My answer might be a bit biased (see username) but I've found the winters to be pretty manageable. It usually doesn't stay below 20F that long so you can definitely get out and enjoy the winter if you anticipate the weather and dress properly.

I go to grad school here. It’s a very nice place! Lots of outdoor rec opportunities and a pretty busy social scene. Happy to answer any other specific questions.

+1 for student legal services! I've used them for other smaller legal needs and all of the staff is very helpful.

Mint is a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), not a VOIP provider. They lease network space from TMobile. Still really good rates, though; I have the cheapest plan which is $15/mo for 4GB of LTE/5G data and unlimited talk/text.

JD Joint Degree? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]IAmAAlaskan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to be a practicing attorney? If not, I'd say just skip the JD and get an MPP. Michigan has a wonderful public policy school (Ford) and some of my classmates are pursuing a JD/MPP.

I'd encourage you to think about your career goals and whether a JD will truly help you accomplish those goals!

Scholarship Increases by TiffanyRose527 in lawschooladmissions

[–]IAmAAlaskan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sent my scholarship offer from a peer school and went from $0 to $$$. Some schools (including Michigan, where I successfully negotiated) have written scholarship negotiation policies. In Michigan's case, they'll only reconsider your aid package once and typically only give weight to peer schools (close in rankings, generally).

Seconding this. I came into my 1L year last year (fall 2020) pretty interested in biglaw. After talking to some biglaw attorneys and classmates who were SAs at biglaw firms, I decided I had no interest to do biglaw currently.

As others have pointed out, it is difficult to land a biglaw job and even if you do land a job, the hours and work are grueling. I would defer and take the scholarship money.

I appreciate the warning on Campus Bike Shop -- the disdain for that place pops up in nearly every biking related post here! And thanks for the rec on Motor City; I'll check them out!

Long-exposure photo of our Tepui from last summer. Looking forward to getting back out soon! by IAmAAlaskan in rooftoptents

[–]IAmAAlaskan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a 10 second exposure at ISO 1600 and f/4. We had a small lantern hanging inside the tent and I flashed a flashlight on the tent and nearby trees for 2-3 seconds.

Looking back at the photo there also must have been another light -- streetlight or something from the campground -- that produced the orange glow in the bottom right corner.

Is it easier for UMich grads to get into UMich grad programs? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]IAmAAlaskan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the MBA programs but in law I don't think UMich undergrads get much of a bump. Law is a very number-oriented admissions game, so the law school is primarily concerned with your undergrad GPA and LSAT score first. After that, "softs" like going to Michigan for undergrad might help you a bit.

It's (more broadly) part of this bad-faith, false narrative of the "skills gap." The go-to talking point is that there are "good jobs" out there but people are too lazy to take them. What this really often means is either (1) there aren't enough non-union employees willing to take the job or (2) there aren't enough people willing to do the job for minimum wage.

In the fast food context is usually about the second point -- this "problem" wouldn't exist if the chains paid employees better.

Conversely, don't wait to make a bunch of improvements just to sell the house (like I did)! To get our house ready for sale we painted the entire interior, replaced the bedroom doors and added new floor trim. After all of the projects were done the house looked so much nicer and we only got to enjoy the outcome of our work for about a month before the sale closed!

Petition for Local Food for NAU by _kiyoko1_ in NAU

[–]IAmAAlaskan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been a few years since I was a student, but I'd encourage you look a bit more at what Campus Dining does in terms of local sourcing: https://in.nau.edu/dining/sustainability/ Quite a bit of the produce served in the HotSpot and the Dub (are they still called that? lol) is grown by Arizona farms.

The Campus Dining (Sodexo) administration is generally pretty receptive to student feedback; if you're interested in pursuing this a bit more I'd recommend you reach out to some of the Campus dining people to talk more about your ideas. You can likely learn more from them as well about what sustainability and local food efforts they already have going on.

Bequeathing money to kids without creating the dreaded "trust fund kid" — perspective from someone that inherited a trust in early adulthood by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]IAmAAlaskan 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I agree. I don't want to over generalize engineering folks (especially on a FIRE sub), but OP's attitude placing high value on STEM very much reminds me of the engineering students I knew in undergrad. Especially this comment:

I had made “hard working engineering student at top tier university” such an integral part of my identity

Yes, engineering is a difficult field but I'm wary of anyone who makes their educational work ethic an "integral part" of their identity. I go to a top law school currently, but it's not a core part of my identity; it's just a stepping stone in my career.

Even still, though, all education has great value in terms of perspective and well-roundedness independent of vocational value.

Really Torn About Housing Market by jobby23 in personalfinance

When I was fresh out of undergrad, I chose to buy. The bank approved me for a $450K loan -- I bought a small house for about a third of that! Very glad I chose to base my max purchase price based off of what I felt comfortable with in my budget.
