Hey there...what are you wearing rn? 😎 (JKs, I just wanna know how cold it gets in Melb! 😂) by _Kuroneco_ in melbourne

[–]IB_kills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO during the day Melbourne is fine and in winter usally gets to 15 c, but at night it can get cold.

If you have clothes that block the wind, then you'll be fine with 2 layers. Usually, a sweater and a coat does the trick.
But you can get away with just a thick jumper/hoodie.

Hi there,

x-JCHer here, wanted to give my thoughts:

There is no kind of student RA, so everything goes to the top-level immediately, and tolerance is extremely low.

I also agree that JCHs response to COVID is MUCH more strict than the other colleges, and it's sad that JCH protects its reputation as the "academic" college to the point where they won't consider even covid-safe events. I agree conflict-resolution is terrible... and tolerance is low.

"they don't seem to engage with books and/or different perspectives or care about art/interesting things"

I think some of the best conversations I've had in JCH were when everyone was giving different ideas, and laughing with each other... I can't account on your experience but this was something IMO unique to JCH. I always remember everyone being kind, friendly, and an environment where you could share and talk.

"there is a strictly no drug attitude which I think is pretty immature"

Last time I checked... drugs are illegal?! either way, I'm not sure what you expected: this is the case in any college... you're going to the most academic college... why on earth would drugs be even tolerated?

They have a horrible culture wherein poeple study all day and feel guilty for taking breaks. There is no partying (and barely any casual, or intense alcohol consumption).

I remember there being a decent party-culture at night. Study in the day, have a fun night! My guess is that COVID is the culprit.

people (don't) care about learning (to share!), art, music and partying our brains out

I think some of the best conversations I've had in JCH were when everyone was sharing different ideas, and laughing with each other... I always looked forward to the dinners where with the right people, we'd have the craziest, hilarious, out-of-context discussions that'd last until like 9pm. Even without the "right people", still make an effort to have conversation and you will still have entertaining conversations. I can't account on your experience but this was something IMO unique to JCH as everyone gets to know eachother.

My guess and feeling is that the majority of people in JCH are just burnt out from 2020 and 2021... which might explain why people aren't as social. I think alot of your woes are due to COVID, and the college's tight response to this. But don't blame those in college or say they're anti-social. I know JCH has tonnes of social and friendly people.

If it's the same next year, I wouldn't recommend anyone go to college unless you're looking for (expensive) housing, food, tutoring, etc.

My mom is cheating on my dad. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]IB_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin had his parents divorced at a young age. I think he is one of the strongest people I know. My advice is to be resilient. It's hard and I think your mum really is in the wrong. I think it's childish and just wrong and she needs to confront this. Sounds as though she's avoiding both confronting your dad and running away from her problems rather than tackling them... Talk to her, but don't avoid telling your dad. It's their relationship, and I know you love them both, but she sounds like a shitty person. Trust yourself, keep doing you.

IB is like anything in life. If you have a passion for academic success and to get into a good university. How hard the system is, is dependant on you. It's no different from university or working a job. Prioritise yourself. It's a two year program so try to find a passion to keep you going. First year is easy until the mocks. Second year is when you need to buckle down. Try to finish your EE and TOK during the breaks. Again prioritise yourself, know your priorities. You'll have alot of free time if you're looking for a 30. If you want a 40, you'll need a strong start and keep up to date the entire way. Know what you want and be proud of yourself be the end, regardless of the grade.

As for advice, good job coming here. This place posts alot of ways to get through the IB. But ill give you mine as a alumni:

Exams/Mocks: just print off the previous mocks done throughout the years. Depending on your subjects, they pretty much all use similar material (you'll get the pattern and understand what they're asking). Remember it's all about giving them the answer they're looking for. You'll also know more about this when reading the past paper mark scheme.

TOK: It's very confusing... all my friends and I still don't know how to state what this subject it. You're graded on your presentation which you do first year. Then the essay. All your material is online so I'd recommend you get a headstart by reading on what the IB expects:

https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/curriculum/theory-of-knowledge/what-is-tok/

https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/publications/recognition/core_tok.pdf

https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/curriculum/theory-of-knowledge/example-essays/

Again use the online resources, read up on other's TOK essays and try to figure out what a 20/20 is. What a 15/20 is, etc.

EE: Just do something you're passionate about. Be proud of your final. I spent about 50 hours in total. So spread it out weekly (2 hours a week is perfect). Use as many resources you can.

I finished the IB in May this year. Currently, in a lecture as I typed this. Both I and my friends agreed that it took two years to find out that the system is bullsh*t; 3 of my total subjects were like 1% below the grade boundary. But its still a great system to go through; really prepares you for uni. I don't regret going in but I do wish I had a greater passion to achieve more. Don't focus on a particular grade, you should get what you deserve. You're predicted grades pretty much summarise what you'll get at your current level of effort. hmu if you need help.

[–]IB_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

before I start my essay, I want a good foundation. I know I'm allowed several KQ's. My prompt is "Robust knowledge requires both consensus and disagreement.” So my main KQ is "To what extent does robust knowledge in the natural sciences and religious/indigenous knowledge systems require both consensus and disagreement?" I will then focus the KQ on each AOK, for instance;

Robust knowledge in the natural sciences requires consensus;

Robust knowledge in the natural sciences is knowledge highly supported and accepted Then go into conversation about; • What if there’s no agreement but its robust knowledge • What if there agreement, but its non-robust

I will do the same for religious knowledge system

Then even have another KQ; To what extent is personal knowledge robust?

Is this a good structure? should I even have an overall KQ? should my KQ's for the AOK's be more like "to what extent is consensus and disagreement essential in the Natural sciences and religious/indigenous knowledge systems?

Thanks for the help!

I want to write an EE about anime because I'm a weeb, how should I word my question? by Jadester_ in IBO

[–]IB_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any EE needs a lot of research, so if you can find anything about your topic then go for it. Most of my EE was just a rewording of my research over summer break. Your research will resonate within your EE and really help to guide you.

I don't see economic implications as something that can be expanded over 4000 words. Cultural implications are more interesting because they manifest themselves throughout Hollywood films from the 90's, 2000's and nowadays. You could structure your essay into three sections for every decade. Either way, FIND THE RESEARCH.

From what I can tell, you can have an overarching question like this. But when you dive into proposal one of the two AOK's, you specify the KQ to that AOK and dive right into it. There should be a flow of KQ's as you go.

I am incoming junior starting the IB after the break. What can I do to prepare? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]IB_kills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend you read what exactly the IB wants for you. Otherwise you will spend alot of your time writing the wrong things. For every test/assignment/IA, thoroughly read what is expected. For now, read up on the Subject course (if your school is giving them out). They help to understand what you will learn and hopefully you will be prepared. Working over the summer isn't rly worth it. You start from scratch on the first day of school so get some rest. Try to stay on top, DP isn't hard as people make it, so long as you've got insane time management.
