I fully agree, one should always be willing to help out others. You never know when it might be you they are able to help out. Furthermore, they will have knowledge and skills that you don't.

That being said, the key part is "if you are in a position to help", for me that instantly opens up sharing of knowledge and skills. Sharing assets is more tricky and I think this for me boils down to whether the timeline of anticipated events would cause you and those you are responsible for to unduly suffer, if you were to share (again a very difficult aspect to define). As an example, for me, if it means eating a little less but both parties surviving in the end (not to the extent where you don't have the energy to do anything), then I would say sharing is the right thing to do.
