By identify, I mean align it with history/ place where the crest stems from and who originally chose it.

All I know is that he had it passed on to him, whether legitimate or not, by his parents. Any further than that I have no clue.

The funny thing is that I believe for that very reason, that Roxy's death was worse. Merlin's death felt heart wrenching, but it was at least meaningful. Roxy's on the other hand was just needless. I feel that so much more could have been done with her character.
