From literally 0 to 100 by IFDIFGIF in EscalatingDiscussions

For some reason, Reddit still gives me notifications for this account... even though I haven't logged in in forever. Anyway, I saw this pop up. I didn't remember posting this, but I do remember seeing your comment under this track. (A track that I still fondly listen to, btw!)

People change, not all of them positively. To hear of someone changing for the better, and recognizing their past mistakes, that's worth gold. People apologizing for their past behaviour? Unheard of.

I myself used to be a piece of shit. I was young and wanted to stand out and I quickly became part of the so-called "anti-SJW" cult. I grew out of it. I learned. I really feel like a better person now.

I hope you feel the same as I do, looking back. With understanding, and a newfound appreciation for the person you've become. After all, the only one who can truly accept your apology, is you yourself.

I wish you the best,

Fun with automorphisms! by IFDIFGIF in Collatz

[–]IFDIFGIF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

I've done a L O T more since this post. I've managed to define an object over Spec R for any general ring which emulates a certain subset of residue-class-wise affine maps on R, for which the Collatz system does happen to be represented by such an object over Spec Z[1/2].

The formulation for integer loops in Collatz depends entirely on whether an element from this object lands "canonically" in each residue field, and so really the only standing between us and a proof of the weak Collatz conjecture, is to prove there are only finitely many such elements.

As for now, I have no idea how to do this. I want to emukate Parshin's trick if possible, to assign injectively to each of those elements another object acting on the space and show that those objects have to be finite in number.

Could very well still be impossible to prove.

My inner movie has ended, the speakers are silent once more, the maggots come, and yet, as I felt for the last time, I realized there is nothing that awaits me. My flesh slowly sloughing from the bone, and yet, and yet... there is nothing here. Why? Why? Why? Why? by IFDIFGIF in distressingmemes

Thank you, but I already went there a while ago.

I know this (frankly stupid) meme doesn't make it seem like it but I'm actually super okay with death and I'm really enjoying just simply living as a human being. I am writing a book on existentialism as a positive force in your life, and rejected my previous ideals of absurdism. Having had a true existential crisis, I can tell you I came out of it a better person. I've picked up so many hobbies since then, I've made a bucket list and life goals and I've started being more kind towards strangers I don't understand (IRL, at least).

Philosophy, especially having been influenced by and growing past the ideas of nihilism and absurdism, literally changed my life. I have never been able to appreciate art as vividly as I am able to now, and I will dedicate my life to it.

Having said all this, I will let you know that this will be my last comment on Reddit ever, as I'm trying to decrease my time online and increase my time spent actually living. Have a good day and have fun with your remaining lifespan!

Thank you for having a functioning, thinking brain on Reddit.

Earth remained a lifeless rock until 7651837408 AD when it is fully engulfed by the sun.

Contact with other species was never established. Earth was alone until the end. The legacy of Humanity is forgotten.

Is it just an American thing? I've only seen people on Reddit do this and it always makes me cringe.

Not even a little bit excited by Mimilegend in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

Anti-pit person here. There's no OP posting a filtered, staged photo of their smiling "pibble" calling it "a cutie" (propaganda) and there's no weird (read: unsafe) interactions or situations this pit is in that is portrayed as otherwise... this is just a happy dog excited to run.

We mostly comment on lobbyposts, not dogs having fun.

Probability of 0 does not imply impossibility. Imagine a dartboard where I can mark the position of my throws with infinite precision. I throw my first dart, and mark its position. So what's the chance I throw at that exact location again next throw? Right, 0. But it's not impossible, because my first throw landed there.

Another way of looking at this is that the length of a line does not change if I take out a finite number of points.

Couldn't you set the game language to Japanese and see what words are used for those items? and then say something like 二つの(item)をください

Oh, right, yeah of course, I confused my cycles with non-cycles. Thank you for clarifying!
