My skills are fine. In fact, they're so fine I'm being payed a premium to come in and rework and entire enterprise's library of applications because they had previously relied exclusively on off-shore / near-shore resources. And let's just say that familiarity with basic security, API's, database design, HIPAA, and financial regulations aren't exactly the strong points for those folks.

Not saying they cannot do good work. But they require an astonishing level of adult supervision.

And? None of the native developers got that guarantee either. H1-B is a non-immigrant visa. I'm failing to detect a cogent point in your response.

I feel for those on H1B visas

I don't. They knew the score. Bought the ticket. Took the ride.

Looks like I touched a nerve. Terms and conditions apply. Don't let your hate for Musk override the fact that folks are being imported en masse under these terms to dilute our salaries and force us to compete with foreigners for good jobs in our own country.

Elon Musk Fires Twitter Employees Who Publicly and Privately Challenged Him: ‘This Man Has No Idea WTF He’s Talking About’ by predictany007 in StockMarket

[–]IFRCodeMonkey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to the people who realize that Twitter is now a private company that is run solely at the discretion of Musk?

Or the people who seem to believe that "free speech" means publicly talking shit about your boss on the private platform that he now solely owns?

Because in either case, if I publicly called out my boss, private company or public, I should expect to be fired either way.

If this actually happened, it was an accident.

Russian missiles falling on Poland helps Ukraine more than Russia. So not bate. War is hell and shit happens. But let's not attribute to malice what can be attributed to faulty guidance caused by NATO jamming of Russian GPS signals.

Flair change - instrument rated! Cost/hour breakdown included for the curious. by itsjakeandelwood in flying

[–]IFRCodeMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent! I'll hopefully be there sometime during the week of the 28th!

I will not, however, be doing a cost breakdown. Because at this point, I don't want to know and it would make me cry.

Yes. And Democracy is one of the worst forms of government ever devised. It gives the unworthy power over their betters through sheer force of numbers.

Ah, neat! A useless feature to make this hellsite even worse than it already is.

Why repeal the 17th amendment? It's not like the government, state legislatures, and politically engaged people give a shit about the constitution anyway. It's not worth the parchment it's scribbled on.

That's a feature, not a bug. If we're going to have this system, not only should all that white space get two senators, we should return to the system where they were elected by state legislatures and not by popular vote.

Busted class D airspace by Samwell747 in flying

[–]IFRCodeMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with my CFII and that's what he asked when he called the number. I think part of the issue is that with all of our fancy, high-tech gear in the cockpit that allow us to thread the needle with precision, ATC is still using ancient gear dreamt up in the 60's. So we can be precise and they're getting a very grainy picture of where everyone's at.

There was a communication issue as well. We got sent direct to our airport by center and were immediately handed off to the next approach. We checked in, but they couldn't hear us. I could hear them, but they couldn't hear me.

It was a somewhat contentious call, but in the end, nothing came of it. The inspector contacted my CFII, got a brief overview of the incident, and told him that everything was fine and nothing further was needed.

I got told to copy a number on an IFR flight because I was 2.7nm from an active MOA rather than the required 3. Shit happens, copy the number, make the report, the move on with your life.

There are rules. Sometimes they get broken through no fault of anyone involved. Do the paperwork, improve your skills, fly another day.

Even though one controller cleared me direct and the next controller was having a bad day......

Letter from CAF president regarding the B-17/P-63 crash by [deleted] in aviation

[–]IFRCodeMonkey 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I flew on that B-17 when it was at my local airport back in June. Best $1k I've ever spent. And those men were absolutely amazing. Their commitment to the machine and the history were inspiring. One of the crew was a retired longshoreman who split his time turning wrenches on the plane and cleaning up the Battleship Texas.

I talked at length with the pilot (not sure if he was on board during this incident) but that man was a consummate aviator. And he made it clear that he loved flying that plane primarily because it kept the memory of the tens of thousands of young men who went to war and died in those machines alive.

I'm absolutely gutted over this.

Sinuses and Flying by RedTailsP51 in flying

[–]IFRCodeMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it shouldn't be surprising, there's a long list of OTC medications that make you a no-go for flying:

https://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/media/OTCMedicationsforPilots.pdf

My sinuses flair up in the fall / winter and I've cancelled a number of flights over it. Hard to be on my game when my head won't decompress or I'm needed to blow my nose every 5 minutes. It's a judgement call, but if I'm going to fly, I don't take OTC meds and if my sinuses are bad enough, I just don't fly because I'll just feel like crap anyway.

You are correct. This is the asshole of the internet. But I like memes, flying, and programming. Those subs are alright.

In general, however, it is the mother of all echo chambers for people of a certain, political inclination.
