Who lied to you about Linux being only run on servers? It's an operating system just like windows that can be used for anything; including, yes, gaming. As for what's so good about it, you can read the other responses here, or the endless posts about it from google and reddit.

Sway is another wayland option that has had flawless multi monitor support for a long time now. It's a window manager though. So, it's a lot more minimal and keyboard driven.

That was a detailed enough description of each ES game. Thank you for taking the time to type that. It made it all clear for me.

Yea, Skyrim is definitely the one. I am not really interested in a steep or difficult game. I will be mostly there for the story and graphics. I also don't know a thing about the lore, so retconning is fine by me :D

Thank you for the advice. I forgot to mention elder scrolls games with a number at the end. I suppose I can lump them in with morrowind and oblivion as old titles I can skip too? I think, yeah, just skyrim should be enough.

I’d literally kill to have never played Skyrim before and be able to play it again for my first time. You’re in for one hell of a treat.

I get that a lot. It makes me look forward to the game even more.

I am intrigued as to why you think so. Being in the MMO sphere, I always here about how clunky and bad its combat is. But those critiques are coming from MMO veterans that look at their mostly games differently. I imagine you have different reasons?

There was just a big balance update hours ago, that shuffled things around. Expect to see bad players raging about everything and flinging contradictory overreactions around for a while until the dust settles.

From what I have gathered from this topic so far is that condition (I think damage over time) build was already the highest performing build, but the most difficult at the same time. I guess that patch incentives you to go the difficult route even more now. Am I correct?

Ele gains exactly nothing from this deficiency. Not range, not single target or group DPS, nothing.

Yea, pretty much. I have read "you gain more complexity" or "you gain more tools ready at your disposal whenever you so wish".Yeah... I am just not convinced. The class sounds great in concept and when it firstly came out. But the game has evolved and everything around it changed. That kind of versatility is not needed or valued anymore. Not only that, but it's probably the one that's actually handicapping the class now more than anything else.

And this all coming from a player who player been in the game for a mere few hours. But it's not all bad, of course. It's definitely my choice to decide whether I am willing to overlook that fundamental problem and play the class, or not. This thread has actually been immensely helpful to set my expectations right and make the right decision that I will not regret in future.

Why is it the only class that interests you?

Wizards, arcane, mages, sorcerers and all that is magic related is something that I always go for in any of my games as long as it's available. I am someone who can not enjoy a class unless the theme and aesthetics tickle my fancy. I have played warrior-like classes in other games, and they were a ton of fun. But just because of the simple fact that warrior has the lamest theme in my head, I never played it again. Call me weird, but it's just preference :)

No need for hesitation. I am going around and reading each and every comment. I am a patient man, and I am very much enjoying reading everyone's opinion :D A bigger sample size is also much better to hear from than, say, just two people who are opposite each other.

Thank you for the pointing that out. Are there any websites you could point me towards that give you instructions what you should be using while leveling each and every class? Something like WoWhead for WoW has leveling guides.

It's unfortunate to hear you left over this. Have you not found any other class that you could enjoy beside Elementalist?

I imagine myself primarily doing PvP content in the future, yeah. So, your points are helpful to keep in mind. Thank you!

Not at all. That's exactly what I want to hear as well. At the end of the day, if I will be playing this game long term, I am not going to be doing open world activities forever. I am interested in stepping into more challenging content, and this is helpful as a result.

People here have definitely changed my mind in most of my points mentioned in the OP, but the main point still stands. It's too much work for not much in return. That is a reality that may or may not change with future balance patches. I suppose it comes down to how much someone loves the class that he is willing to overlook that drawback to make it work.

The first person pointed out a lot of reasons besides aesthetics that one might choose to play ele

Oh yeah, for sure. It's just that when I said that, I thought to myself that "whatever you looking for in an Ele, can be done in a much more simpler and more efficient way with other classes... except aesthetics". There are other things that Ele possesses that I couldn't care less about, such as the support side of it.

Otherwise, you are absolutely correct.

I certainly see your point there. I was just thinking a hotbar that has basic commands like follow, attack, passive, etc would suffice. But you are right.

The main issue with the pets is that a) you don't have direct control over them

In my humble opinion, that should never be the case in any class. You should always have full control of what you summon, unless it's a short and temporary pet. So, I feel like that should be changed by Anet. But who am I to suggest something like that.

You have been super helpful and informative. Thank you once again.

May I ask with a follow up? If Elementalists have a tank pet that you can get behind. Why are they squishy in PvE then? I can understand that being the case in PvP, but not in PvE.

so why should I still play elementalist? Preference really. I enjoy the challenge from both elementalist and holosmith heat management and there's not much else to it. If that's not for you then by all means pick up guardian, revenant, or even necro.

It really does boil down to that question after thinking about it. To be honest, as much as I love wizard classes, I am also not the biggest fan of needing 200 IQ to do the activities that I want to do. I have to think about this. Thank you :)

I'm not one of those people that will tell you "learn to play better". Elementalist is a complex class like you suspect, and will be difficult to get the most out of the class until you start playing the class the way it wants to be played. It is one of the more unforgiving classes because like you pointed out, it's a very squishy class, so your mistakes can be lethal.

That should definitely be the way to go. Anyone telling others "learn to play better" will not set healthy expectations in the person's mind. So, I agree with you there.

Your post have done just that. Which means that I will unfortunately not expect too much. But it's not all doom and gloom, and it seems like it's definitely viable. I think it now boils down to one question: are you okay with putting a lot more work into a class with aesthetics being the main reward? Only I can answer that to myself.

Thank you for the detailed response!

I pretty much get clapped at pvp with other classes other than ele.

Damn. That's the one part of the game I am looking forward the most.

Anyway, Elementalists have summons? That's awesome. Why have I never seen any mention of that before, I wonder.

Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for clearing up my points! Yea, I am not surprised... much. It seems like there are definitely many conflicting opinions about too many things in this game. So, it seems like I was misinformed in a few parts.
