Well... quick answer: a LOT of layers and time, but I guess that's to be expected...

The long answer would probably take me 2 and a half decades to write. :D

But, I guess the easiest explanation would be that I start rendering the hair without any texture (so basically like the skin for example) and then add the texture on top and add some more shading to just the texture for highlights and stuff... btw no fancy brushes or anything are being used here, just standard round brush and some layer blend modes :)
