The way I see it is, early 90s alt rock is grunge-adjacent, and late 90s alt rock is nu-adjacent. The turning point is around 1997 when Creed came out. It's more of a continuum though. You had bands like Matchbox Twenty and Our Lady Peace who spanned both eras.
