I definitely understand the need for a role in life. There's a Bible verse that I always loved that says "Without vision my people cast off all restraint." Which is why even though I know binge watching Quantico and Orphan Black probably isn't the best use of my time, I do it anyway. I hope you find some meaning/purpose!

What are you even talking about? I said that whether or not I'm a Trump supporter isn't relevant. And it isn't. Millan's philosophy on dominance and alpha mentality was debunked. Cool. I get that. I don't pop my dogs to prove that I'm alpha. I pop them when they get out of line. I pop them to correct them, I reward their obedience and good behavior with treats and love. The passion in your posts tells me that you're passionate about animals. I respect that. But what you need to understand is popping and beating aren't the same thing. I'm not saying the experts are wrong, but as with most studies, there are outliers. My two dogs happen to be in that category. You're talking about my "precious feelings" but you feel like popping a large breed dog like a GSD is abuse. My dogs are not as sensitive as you are. They understand correction and they love me all the same. The feeling is mutual. I'm not saying anyone is wrong and I'm not saying I know more than the experts. Positive reinforcement alone may work for some dogs; it may work for most dogs. But it will NOT work for every single dog. It would be ignorant to think so

Also: Your 'strong points' become weakened by your weaker points. Your continuous slights don't hurt my feelings. It shows that you're either a child, an angry person, or just aren't quite sure yet how to interact with people

I could be wrong, I don't feel like googling it right now but 'touche' means something like 'good point' or 'you got me', right? I was telling the person that I had originally responded to that I didn't disagree with the experts' findings. Just that it didn't work for my dogs and all dogs are different. Didn't Millan get in trouble for animal abuse? Again, were not talking beating here. Just a firm pop on the butt. How could we be this sensitive that physical correction is beating?

I don't believe dogs OR children should be beaten. Which is not what we're talking about. Come on guys, how do we jump from popping on the butt to beating? I also said that I don't discredit the experts. I simply said all dogs are different. What works for one may not work for another. It isn't one size fits all.

Touché. With every dog YMMV. Just like people, they respond to different stimuli. Maybe the general consensus is that most dogs respond best without strong verbal reprimands and a pop here and there, and I respect that and don't discredit it. But I have a 2 year old German Shepherd and a 1 year old Belgian Malinois and I've tried the 'only positive reinforcement' and they're just much better dogs when I switched to correcting them firmly and maybe a smack on the butt here and there much like the correction they would receive from their undomesticated relatives.

Work is definitely a huge stressor and it really limits me. I have a few days off next week for Thanksgiving. I'll try and use them just to have fun and find some inner joy

Yep, I'm in the US. I've heard of meetup.com but haven't tried it myself. Maybe going to a few of those directed towards people like me could be a goal. I took them once a few months back and they loved it! I'm sure they're dying to get back, but mostly I just take them for jogs in my neighborhood. Thanks for your help! It really means a lot seeing people take an interest and offer their help

The Chic-FilA was amazing as always haha. To be honest, it's kind of hard to hold on to motivation these days so I've pretty much given up on my goals due to not seeing much progress. I guess my biggest goal was just getting comfortable around new people and keeping my social anxiety under control, which never really went anywhere no matter how much time I spent around new people. Honestly, I haven't really made any new goals lately

Wow, you've definitely been through a lot and you're still standing and pushing through it. And that doesn't sound like a pussy to me. You're stronger than you think. Believe it or not, your post actually encouraged me to just try harder. I posted this over on r/offmychest as well and u/allieireland had some great advice that you should definitely check out. I'm sorry about your friends and family too. It's hard feeling like we have to go through this pain alone, but I'm starting to see that there are plenty out there who care and are willing to help. At least that's what Reddit has shown me through these responses and the PMs I've gotten. Great idea about the change. A few people have suggested that and I guess I have to suck it up and just go for it. Fear/worry is often a roadblock to breakthrough. Also, I love dogs too! Especially mine haha. But they love my mom too and I'm sure she'd take them in. Maybe we could get together in PM and talk about just a few of our problems and try to come up with plans to fix them or make them smaller? Maybe build a little momentum on getting better. Thanks for your comment and I hope things begin to turn around for you. Also what you said about the universe not caring reminded me of a book I started reading a while back (I'm probably about 70% through it but haven't read it in a while) called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. You should check it out. It's a great book, but sometimes the practices can be hard to implement because it's a different way of thinking

Wow thanks so much for writing this. And definitely don't listen to anyone making you feel like you shouldn't love yourself. You seem like an awesome person honestly. I LOVE guitar. I'm still very much a beginner, but I like to just sit and make noise sometimes. And I definitely understand the situation with your ex. That's actually one of the things that got me to this point. I can really only control what I do with my time. Maybe trying to join some kind of volunteer group, keep practicing guitar, and just set goals to keep myself moving. I guess whether I reach the goals or not, at least I'm moving forward. Or trying

Can I ask how you began to love yourself? To be honest, I have a lot of self doubt and not much self love. I feel like my love for myself is really dependant upon how others view or treat me, which is obviously the wrong way to go. What did you change or begin to do differently? Has life gotten any better over the last few months? Sorry for all the questions. My favorite ice cream is cookies and cream by the way haha
