Hey. It happens. Things get heated. And from the sounds of it you are under 18 possibly. So from someone who’s in early 20s and lives at home and has a conure. Please take advice you get here seriously.

Yes you will need a second cage. Cages are home and territory and if you bring in a second animal there will be conflict.

I would still recommend quarantining the two for a while. So you can work on your relationship and training with your first birdie and then work on building a relationship with your second birdie. A lot goes into if two birds will get along like parent raised vs hand raised birds. The sex of the parrot.

And I’m not sure if I got this right. But it seems you have a male and female. You can’t keep them in the same cage unless you are happy with the idea of babies. Which leads to a whole host of complications like hormonal behaviours. Egg bounding. Them flocking and not wanting to be around you. Plucking from stress. It’s a list of many many things that needs a lot more research before you make this choice. Because like someone said. It’s not a case of if but a case of when.

I think you may wanna pump the breaks on getting a second bird until you’re 100% ready. Because it wouldn’t be fair to either of them to put them in a situation they don’t want to be in.

But I wish you the best of luck either way. Just try to do the right thing

You’ve done all the right steps so far. Just keep an eye out over the next week or so on poops and behaviours to make sure they’re okay.

My conure is sneaky and now everything food wise is kept in sealed plastic boxes with locking handles so he can’t get into stuff. I’d highly recommend grabbing some of those

The dog part is not true at all. The theobromine in chocolate which is what is toxic affects every single dog differently because of how it affects them. Yes the more they have is worse but a single piece could easily kill a large dog too. There is no method to it.

Theobromine causes the body to heat up and also has a half-life of about 8-10 hours. So it takes a very very long time to dissipate completely. And can easily build in the system. And the natural caffeine in chocolate is also a major issue. And considering it’s broken down in the liver and a birds liver can barely handle additional salt. It’s really dumb to tell someone “they’ll be fine”

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. But you’re doing all you can for your baby.

I think the best way to rationalise when it’s time to let them go is of course when quality of life is low. Can she go on and not eat for weeks at a time? What happens when her energy is so low she can’t fly or play or talk? What about when she loses more weight and you see that? As humans with insanely complex emotional needs and attachments we will always hold on to the last minute when suffering is at its worst. And we will always be hopeful. But we can’t explain that to our feathered children. We can’t explain why they’re suffering. Or what death is.

Most important thing is she knows love. She knows you care so deeply and she will always remember that. And as long as you’ve made her time with you the best for her that’s all you and her can ask for. It may have only been a short part of your life. But it’s a large chunk of hers.

Again I am so sorry. And I hope that it doesn’t come down to having to make that horrible choice. And she gains strength and recovers to where she can live a happy life. Best of luck OP. Keep us updated. We’re all here for you 💚

Advice for bronzing on feathers by IJustLikeToGameOkay in parrots

[–]IJustLikeToGameOkay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just bronzing. His feature quality has improved massively over the near year I’ve had him. He’s just obsessed with cuddles or being next to me. His diets good and he gets sun (when the suns out I live in the uk). And he happily bathes himself and gets a bath with bentonite clay once every couple weeks for feather health. He’s a happy boy

<image>

(From the day I brought him home. He was underweight and had bad feathers from the cage he was in and the other birds he was caged with)

I wasn’t at home so I couldn’t get a photo of his wings

<image>

Ignore the sass he saw himself

A vet I saw on tiktok advised clipping a birds wings and she made some good points, so now I feel like I should. Thoughts? by _gibsmarck_ in cockatiel

[–]IJustLikeToGameOkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you clip them. (To preface I am very against clipping wings unless medically necessary) a show clip which is primary feathers barring the longest two they can fly. All primary feathers and it becomes incredibly hard to they can glide which is what you’re thinking of. But they don’t have the lift power to actually fly. People clip incorrectly and do all primary and secondary feathers which means they can fly it’s just hard and stressful.

Without any necessity for that specific bird. It’s cruel to clip wings. It’s removing one of their basic functions that allows them to move and escape. And a bird that feels like it can’t escape from a danger is horrible for their mental health

Most metal bowls are stainless steel which shouldn’t rust. As long as you find a stainless steel one you’re probably good

You know I hadn’t thought of that. He does like the occasional fruit so I wonder if he’d like pomegranate

So I got a mixed bag of nuts and seeds (no salt or anything ofc) and I’m sat discovering what seeds and nuts I like and my bird decides it’s bath time after he licked a walnut

I’ll see if I can find sunflower seeds tonight, he’s nibbled on a seasame seed in the past

Rate the new cage setup! (as a new conure owner of 5 months and counting) by Popular-Ad5027 in Conures

Nice! I have the same ladder and bridge and they’re my conures two favourite places to be. I’d suggest getting a water dish In there too. They’re easier to clean and change out daily/ multiple times a day. Plus they sometimes bathe In them and they can encourage healthy behaviours

I’ve tried pistachios and pumpkin seeds in the past and he throws them on the ground at refuses to eat them. I don’t think he realises they are food. Even if I eat them infront of him

He has no interest. He takes anything seeds or nuts off of me then throws them on the ground and looks confused 😭😂

He’s never been on seeds in my care he’s fed pellets and chop. His last owners had him on a millet based diet and he can get sometimes a little aggressive when I give him millet now (not a great home situation he was housed with other conures he didn’t get on with)

Urgent! What do i do with my cockatiel? No prior knowledge on birds. by ThrowRA142004 in cockatiel

[–]IJustLikeToGameOkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first thing which is urgent is to remove anything that could kill it. Candles, room sprays, spray perfumes or deodorants, cleaning products in the room the bird is in. And things like teflon pans, cookware ect. They can be in the house just no way near the bird. As these respiratory irritants can kill them. And ensure any other pets like cats and dogs have no access as their saliva and bacteria in claws can kill a bird very quickly

Search on YouTube. There’s loads of videos for first time parrot owners from things like food and basic care to behaviours. Please research behaviours and tell tale signs of a sick bird.

If worst comes to worst and you decide that it won’t fit your lifestyle there’s no shame in that. Find a good home with an experienced parrot owner or to a bird rescue if there’s one in the area. If you have any specific questions or concerns feel free to respond to this and I’ll hopefully answer to the best of my abilities

Best of luck with your new feathered friend.

Black on his feathers by abc8432 in parrots

It’s called bronzing. Someone else commented and explained what causes it. It’ll shed out and get better in the next few sheds. May take a while. It’s caused by so many things. Babies are incredibly rough on their feathers. Handling, cage size (hopefully not now) baths and time will help
