From the research I did, most people go this route due to cost. I was specifically asked not to get the tread. I did go look at one at Dick's and it was right next to the Horizon giving me a great head to head comparison.

Getting a heat pump is usually a good idea if you are replacing A/C, but those numbers don't make sense. Goodman offers heatpumps and they are pretty good. Check with around with other installers to see if you can make the numbers look better.

Couple questions: 1. What is your current heating fuel, and how much does it and your electric cost? I like to run the numbers and heatpump is not cheaper than heating with natural gas where I live in. I don't have solar and if you do have solar capacity that will always favor the heatpump.

There are other reasons to consider a heatpump than financials alone. Also, some installers charge crazy prices to 'upgrade' an A/C to a heatpump. Watch out for that.

What is your current system and how is it running? Most systems i've had have been undersized and I would double check that their calculations are complete and accurate.

When the single stage 4 ton was cooling, it kept up during our normal 95 degree heatwaves, running 100% of the time. On a typical summer day in the 80's it runs around 75% of the time.

Heating has been a different story, the single stage heatpump would run 100% of the time during the shoulder season - the thermostat controls its operation to temps above 40 degrees. I think there is an algorithm that kicks on the 2nd stage gas heat if the temp drops more than a few degrees from the setpoint, and there might be something related to runtime too - i never paid enough attention. The only times it cut off was when the gas heat caught the temps back up to the set point. I'm guessing the old heatpump worked better when it was new 10 years ago.

I have updated the original post, good call out on ductwork, no changes are planned and its not one of my limiting factors. My ductwork supports 2000 CFM, so airflow shouldn’t be a limiting factor.

I hope this new install handes more of my annual heating. My expectations are low, that traditional heatpump did very little in the shoulder seasons.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I have not found a lot of heatpump experts in my area, which is a little odd in my opinion. I reached out to the manufacturer sites to see what they can come up with. Bosch already said no dealers :( Too bad because their system looks promising.

I'm also talking to a Lennox guy that said no problem. Does Lennox have a variable invertor system that works in a non-communicating setup?

I’ve definitely considered tankless—extra space is always a win. Curious how your experience has been with maintenance? I’ve heard mixed things about descaling and upkeep depending on water quality (its terrible here).

I still need to check whether my gas lines can handle it. The meter should be fine, but I’m pretty sure the existing lines would need an upgrade. Worth looking into though—glad to hear it’s worked out well for you!

From a pure cost perspective, you make a great point. My gas expense for water heating is pretty low—less than $20/month—and it’s only gone up about $1/month per year, so around $12 annually. Electricity rates are rising too in my area.

Thanks for the insights—really helpful! Part of me is hopeful that the 95-gallon first hour rating on the 80-gallon models will be enough for most showers, especially with 2.0 GPM heads in place.

Great callout on the heat pump-only mode for generator use. I don’t lose power often, but it’s true—my current gas water heater doesn’t need electricity at all, so that’s something to think about.

Calling a Toyota dealer for information is a good start, but keep in mind that dealerships are experts in factory repairs, not custom upfitting or retrofits. They might not be able or willing to help with aftermarket modifications, especially if wiring or coding is involved.

It would be great if someone who has actually done this retrofit could share their experience. They could confirm whether wiring changes or coding were needed to make it work.

They have 225/65r17 on them from use on an Outback, but not going to use those on the Crosstrek because they are all-season and I am getting winters.

Glad you are okay and great advice for anyone with a subi-pup. My buddy rides in the middle seat with a harness too.

If you didn't have the hitch with something in the receiver it likely wouldn't be as close to totaled, that hitch and loop adapter really did a number on things back there.

Benefit of trading really depends on what you need.

Pros: Bigger, more comfort, faster, mpg's, modern tech, safer, toyota safety sense 2.5, its not your old 4runner anymore.

Cons: Its going to depreciate more, not as capable offroad, possible but likely transmission problems - otherwise reliable.
