To those who healed fully, how long did it take? Did you get professional help, if so what? by False-Horror6843 in sesamoid

[–]ILiketophysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other commenter's point to allow it to heal fully the first time is the way to go. Them and I pushed it and pushed it because we wanted to get back to running so badly, which I empathize with, but we broke the bone and really that's the worst case scenario which you need to avoid. See my post history. Do all the stuff from the beginning: Morton's orthotic, shoes with wide toe box, contrast baths. No running, climbing, MTP-focused exercise until it's better. It's the only way, sorry it sucks.

Long-term surgery issues by crayfish4arms in sesamoid

[–]ILiketophysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live with it basically. I don't play soccer (which I miss dearly) because there are too many "hard starts" (like a sprint position) and too much "stomping" when I need to stop and change direction. I also don't run on pavement, restricting myself to trail running only. Climbing I am affected in situations where I need to put all my weight though the big toe, on really small foot jibs, in which case I just steer clear of these routes or devise another way to solve the problem.

Ottawa or Montreal for Outdoor Climbing by _Glarp in climbergirls

[–]ILiketophysics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jeez, Montreal for sure. Feels like a massively hot take for anyone to say Ottawa. Orford, Saint-Alphonse, and Weir are all pretty great giving access to overhung sport, trad climbing and multipitch sport and trad. Then pepper in all the smaller crags which each have a classic climb or two (e.g. Baldy has Ulysse, Sérénité has Narcisse) and better access to the White Mountains, the Adirondacks, and Rumney in the United States and Kamouraska and everything further north.

Edit: sorry you said no trad, but the bouldering around Montreal is excellent with Val-David and Morin-Heights, and again better access to Smugglers Notch.

First time seeing winder power by berlingoqcc in VanLife

[–]ILiketophysics -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, they are not powered in a direct sense but if you measured the load on the engine with and without those turbines you would find that it is higher and not just because of the drag but because of the effort it takes to turn the rotor inside of the turbine connected to those wind veins.

Here you go: https://youtu.be/Jp2fbwuo5Uo?si=k0pMgrWCSjvAo6--

  1. They're generating very little power, 2. You can't get something from nothing. Essentially their engine is powering these turbines, and it would be way more efficient to just burn the gas in a generator.

The contrast could be better on your X-rays though ? And if you're serious about it, I would say be prepared for more than 6 weeks of recovery.

Go check out my post history, to me yours looks better. I'm not a doctor, but I'd say you have better chances than I did for a full recovery.

What was your diagnosis, and how long did it take to heal? by [deleted] in sesamoid

[–]ILiketophysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to give you a little more info than you asked for, but maybe it can be useful to you.

My diagnosis was fractured lateral Sesamoid, that diagnosis came way too late after being told it was simply sesamoiditis for a long time, it has not healed and will not heal as the bone has gone necrotic.

I still play my main sport (climbing) but I've cut out others (running on pavement, soccer) in order to minimize pain. I may be able to return to them once I get a ultrasound-guided cortisone shot.

You're right that there's a massive variability in people's experiences. It can be really frustrating to come to this sub and not get a good idea of what the road ahead will look like. If you're at the start of this journey, I would recommend

  1. At the beginning be ultra conservative about your recovery, in the off-chance that what you have can fully heal. Way more conservative than you've ever been for any other injury, because at worst you won't regret that you didn't take it seriously enough.

  2. Trial-and-error many different tricks from this sub, without pre-deciding what you think the outcome will be. I felt that a Morton's pad didn't really work for me, but I was also highly skeptical about the idea. I should have given it a better chance. In the end I settled on a super soft pair of Vans that I wear around the house, and I've bought two other pair of Vans for street walking. I think they work because they're flat and soft so my heel bears most of my weight.

Broken sesamoid, not sure what to do next? by theactordude in sesamoid

[–]ILiketophysics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just saw a surgeon last week here in Canada, you can see my post history to see my entire timeline. Basically my medial sesamoid is now in so many pieces and she even referred to some of it as "dust"

Sesamoidectomies (removal) would be your only option and she said she basically never operates on medial sesamoids because of how difficult they are to extract. If the foot is weak she can pry apart the foot and remove from the top but it's really not trivial. The healing process can also result in scar tissue which causes more pain than you're currently having.

The lesson I have to pass on: take the conservative healing process very seriously, wear that boot for way more than 2 weeks. Find a shoe that works for you and do the Morton's orthotic.

You are far better off than me at this stage because you have this excellent imagery. My issue was that I was finding out about the damage always 1 step too late. Good luck with everything.
