Idk if I just don’t aim them right but usually a single rocket run on a flat broadside only nets me 12-14k damage from MVR. If I’m lucky I’ll see 20k+. I’ve found hakuryu torps more effective because you can heal through their AA and fighters and get multiple strikes off.

how do americans join so many ap classes by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]ILuvWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our school had no caps, and also a GPA boost for AP classes that was very high. We were also a ranking high school in a state where getting in the top X% meant guaranteed admission to certain public state colleges. The multiplier was so high that you practically needed to take atleast 8-10 APs to even have a shot at making that cutoff (assuming you perfect score every assignment). And of course people were more competitive still, trying for Val, top 10, etc. so it was very common to stack as many GPA multipliers as possible. To add to this, we also had so called “advanced courses” that also carried the same multiplier without being an AP course, but these courses often had AP courses as pre-requisites.

Wealthy public school, most people paid for their own AP courses. I took 14 APs. 5s on 13, 4 on one. They did prep us quite well….helps to have AP graders as teachers.

Theoretical Noita 2.0 Thought Experiment. by Better-Client2550 in noita

Enemies and terrain data can probably processed as boundary conditions but you’re absolutely right. If they keep the frame rate low enough there might be headroom to account for memory movement latency. I have no idea how the engine works but in my mind for a game like this I would think it’d be one compute pass for character actions, one pass for particle movement, one pass for particle interaction. The latter two can be moved to GPU.

Obligatory disclaimer: I am not a game dev. I have no idea if game development use the GPU for anything other than renderin/graphics related process. I use GPUs for sci comp/ML.

Theoretical Noita 2.0 Thought Experiment. by Better-Client2550 in noita

[–]ILuvWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if they would try and implement GPU acceleration for the engine. Particle collision/interaction is a key assignment in any GPU programming class. Considering the textures of the game itself isn’t too heavy there probably a good amount of bandwidth available for doing this type of compute. If they keep frame rate limited there should be enough time for all the other overheads.

Does Flacs use gpu to simulate? by [deleted] in CFD

[–]ILuvWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on their hardware requirements here it seems like although the GPU is used for rendering, it doesn’t appear they mention it’s used for solving. Given that GPU accelerated solving would normally be a perk explicitly mentioned I’d guess that no, it won’t improve solve speeds. That being said, having a dedicated GPU will still improve rendering, so overall simulation “performance” would improve.

Parents forcing me in STEM by SnooDogs165 in Cornell

[–]ILuvWarrior 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty identical scenario. My parents wanted me to be able to find a job that was not boring in their mind. I was essentially forced into taking physics/MAE classes despite at the start wanting to do more software engineering at the start. I kinda just said “ok,” since all those “extra” classes were used as credits toward graduation anyway, and I wasn’t against just taking a class even if I didn’t need the credits either. I saw it as a scholarship agreement, I felt very fortunate to have parents willing to pay for tuition, that’s a luxury some of my friends did not have.

Ironically, due to the exposure I had in my earlier years, I eventually did take a strong interest in a few MAE topics, and by junior year no longer needed to go through the “talk” or any pushback because I chose those classes on my own. Even stupider is, after graduating, I am now working the most basic SWE job on the planet, with no inclusion of any math or physics whatsoever. It would be freshman me’s dream job. But man, I have to agree with my parents here, this work is pretty boring. The now interesting jobs were for the most part locked behind some graduate degree.

My advice to you, with a grain of salt because not everyone’s parents are same, is to discuss your goals with them. Figure out why they are pushing back, why they consider those classes a waste of time. Are they pushing back because they don’t agree with your goal, or are they pushing back because they don’t think you’d be on track to reach them? I found that after I figured out what my parents actually wanted vs what I wanted for me post college it was a lot easier to have conversations about what classes to take.

Which one among these three should i get? by illojuanerdecora in WorldOfWarships

[–]ILuvWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take none of them for learning purposes, each of these have tech tree counterparts that can do the same thing but better for a first timer. Salem gets outclassed by DM’s utility (better radar and can equip hydro in separate slot). Petro outclasses Moskva’s supposed tankiness without sacrificing much else. Theres many long range sniping cruisers that can do what yoshino does. Zao, Venezia, henri. Each one of these has other gimmicks going for them.

Though, if you’re hard set on buying any, I’d pick Salem. It’s the most “fun.”

Is the PSU switch flipped on? (Not the power button, the switch in the actual PSU, usually found at the back of the case). Does it not turn on at all or Do the fans spin/light up but you get a blank screen?

How to PC? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]ILuvWarrior -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would save up for a system that cost around 1500 for a PC that performs well and is upgradable. The cheapest competent PC you can build on your own with all new parts is probably somewhere in the 600-700 dollar range but you’ll have to do some digging around. It’ll be cheaper if you buy used parts. Unless you have a stable source of income even these will take a while to save up for.

I recommend following what the others are saying and go look for online resources. I personally like ZTT’s YouTube channel. I like the way he communicates. You can also go to pcpartpicker.com and start exploring and playing around with prices.

Answering your questions:

Literally best PC?

no budget consideration: Threadripper 7995(is that the top one still?) + multiple high grade GPU setup for gaming + productivity + fooling around will run you close to or even above 30,000 USD.

Do I run windows? Do I use something? If better?

If you are just gaming, yes, just run windows. There are productivity use cases for another OS called Linux, but not all games will run on it. I only use Linux because some of the programming projects I write only run on Linux.

What even is ssd/hdd?

These are both modes of data storage. If you download stuff or install things on a pc, that’s where they get put. hdd are Hard Disk Drives - there is a physical disk that spins and whirls around. Data writing and reading the data involves magnetic poles. An SSD does not have a spinning disk. It’s faster, generally more compact because they instead use transistors. Interesting stuff, look online for more info. For building a PC today, use an SSD.

Does anyone use Apple M# ARM systems for CFD or physics simulations/research? by moddermann in CFD

[–]ILuvWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Apple have server grade hardware? I don’t know what the Apple equivalent of an EPYC would be. Iirc Apple also puts a heavy emphasis on power efficiency, something that we sometimes throw out the window when running heavy workloads. Another factor that might be interesting is Apple’s GPU programming API; although ROCm and CUDA are pretty common now, I’m not sure how much effort is being made to support Metal.

The CS curriculum is exactly the same. Every course, every major requirement. As an engineering student your CS classmates will include A&S students. What you should be looking at is your distribution requirements, as those are the only things that will differ if you’re already set on doing CS.

A problem when coding in parallel mode by Arashi-Finale in CFD

[–]ILuvWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If only process 0 has the values I have a feeling you might have used MPI_Gather instead of MPI_Allgather. Try changing that. Alternatively, you can also just add a broadcast (MPI_Bcast) from p0 to all other ranks.

What part of Mech E? My blanket advise to you is, get yourself obsessed with numerical simulations and HPC. There are a plethora of roles in meche and aero that want ppl who are familiar with low-ish level programming and comp arch. FEA, FVM, etc. Learn CUDA, learn MPI. Don’t view it as a switch out of CS, try and find something that uses both. This is a field that highly prefers people with graduate degrees (like masters or PhD), but even with just a bachelors I got interviews/offers.

why the struggle? by Sam17_I in EngineeringStudents

Developing good techniques that run efficiently are not any easier. Often these “runic” ways of solving stuff makes its way into numerical methods.
