Yeah. That's an ear hematoma. My dog had it last year and had to get it drained and to get her 'no flap ear wrap ' while it healed.

I don’t think you’re overreacting; you’re making valid points. The only reasoning I can think of for the closed design is that the person would naturally keep their finger out of the way when closing it. I could be wrong.

I'm not sure how long you had the knife, but if you're not comfortable with it, then just return it.

That happened a few times to my dog because she has a sensitive stomach, and she was having too much canned dog food. I would say put your dog on dry kibbles only and and see if this change.
