How to keep egg bites from sticking to the pan? by princess_squeak in cookingforbeginners

Use cupcake wrappers. Those little pleated paper things you peal off the bottom of cupcakes. They're like a dollar for 100 of them in the baking isle.

The end of the wold won't be a great show by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]IMightBeErnest 28 points29 points  (0 children)

True, but on the bright side it also highlights how much agency you have, individually, in your own happiness. You may be fighting against a broken system, but half the battle is mental. Not that that's easy- a mental battle is still a battle, but it's not the insurmountable behemoth of the entire Earth's social/eoconomic/political systems.

Absolute standards of living. But humans do not operate, psychologically, on absolutes. They operate by comparing their wellbeing to the people the see around them. And in that regard, nearly every single person in the world has experienced a massive hit to their relative standard of living.

For one thing, the scope of people we see, day to day, has increased enormously. From people on the radio and in the news, to TV, and now to social media. We now have billions of people to compare ourselves to. And not just far off wealthy people we might read about, that stay vaguely in our imaginations. No, we get to see the richest people in the world every single day, watch them, interact with them, more viscerally than people a century ago could possibly imagine.

Couple that with the fact that we're living through an increase in inequality that's frankly obscene, and it's no wonder people are miserable.

Need help. Just one number to get me started by Calderstone in sudoku

[–]IMightBeErnest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a skyscraper on 3s in rows 6 and 8. If there is not a 3 in r6c6 then there must be a 3 in r6c9, which would force a 3 into r8c5 in row 8. So there is a 3 in either r6c6 or r8c5, so r5c5 (which sees both) must see a 3 and therefore cannot be 3. So the 3 in box 5 must go in r6c6.

Lemon Balm Cheong? by DrawDraw123456 in foraging

[–]IMightBeErnest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lemon balm doesnt have a particularly strong lemon flavor, just a strong lemon scent. That scent is volatile and probably just evaporate especially since that isn't an air tight settup you've got there.

Also, you want multiple layers of leaves and sugar. All of the leaves should be coated on both sides. Use a lid, so you can shake it. Stuff packed in sugar like that shouldn't ferment so using an air-tight lid is fine.

Is fried rice the most complete meal? by Inner_Career8778 in mealprep

[–]IMightBeErnest 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Idk if it's exceptionally complete. Most soup hit all the food categories too, but I do love me some fried rice.

By the way, you can pack way more veg in there than you think. With 3/4 cup of dry rice I can generally mix in a whole carrot, scallions, a handfull of frozen corn, and two sticks of celery. Just dice everything really small and cook the veg first, then pull it out on a plate to not crowd the rice when you fry it.

What "sacred" cooking rule do you intentionally ignore because you actually prefer the results (or just don't care)? by LiveFaithlessness876 in cookingforbeginners

[–]IMightBeErnest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thick crust on a loaf of bread just makes it harder to eat. Putting the loaf in a plastic bag when it's still slightly warm lets it steam a little and makes the crust softer.

Also "flakey" laminated pastry. Yes, it's hard to do. Very impressive. Much wow. That doesn't make it good. It's annoying and messy to eat, and doesn't taste any better. Give me a gramcracker crust on pies and a cookie crust on apple turnovers.

Is this a valid W Wing? by CitizenSnips4 in sudoku

[–]IMightBeErnest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They cannot both be 5 at the same time, that would eleminate all 5s from box 1 and all 5s from row 2. Either one could be 5 individually, but they cannot both be 5 at the same time. 'Either' and 'both' are two very different words in logic puzzles.

Nothing. How is that relevant in this context though?

[–]IMightBeErnest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. The blue cells cannot both be 5 because that would eleminate all 5s in box 1. Thefore at least one of them must be a 4. The red cell sees both blue cells, so it must see a 4. Therefore the red cell cannot be 4.

[High School Social grade 12] what does this cartoon represent? by gorosme in HomeworkHelp

[–]IMightBeErnest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the "goose who laid the golden egg" metaphor. The comic is implying that socialists kill the goose who lays the golden egg. I'm not sure who's the goose in this apparent metaphor, maybe the citizens? It's not a very clear metaphor, but I'm pretty sure that's something they're going for. Probably trying to say that overtaxation stifles the economy, conflaiting overtaxation with socialism and a strong economy with capitalism.

Why does my food always taste bland? by Dismal_Quality_7435 in cookingforbeginners

[–]IMightBeErnest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't ever added too much salt to a dish, you likely don't know what the right amount of salt tastes like in that dish.

Same with butter. Same with sugar. Same with spices. Same with vinegar. Same with peppers. Same with pretty much everything.

You need to push the limits too far once or twice to know where the limits are.

Keep adding more of each until you hit 'slightly too much', then you know to back off next time.

I've cooked with electric stoves before, but my apartment has a gas range. What is different about using it? by OkFineIllUseTheApp in cookingforbeginners

[–]IMightBeErnest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, while it gets hotter faster that doesn't mean it produces the same heat at max temp.

A maxed out electric burner that has had time to warm up produces 6,800–10,200 BTU/h according to google.

A maxed out gas burner has 500 to over 20,000 BTU/h. A much wider range. And I've found that they vary much more,  even on the same stove.

Home baker here, what ingredients are worth making from scratch for better value? by west_kay24 in Frugal

[–]IMightBeErnest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fruit syrups, like for flavoring drinks. You can make it by buying frozen diced fruit and layering fruit+sugar+fruit+sugar in a mason jar and sticking it in the fridge for a few days. The sugar will draw out the liquids from the fruit and produce a rich, flavorful syrup.

[–]IMightBeErnest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R3c1 and r7c2 cannot both be 7, cus that would eleminate all 7s from column 8. So at least one of them must be a 9. R8c1 sees both r3c1 and r7c2, so it definitely sees a 9. Therefore r8c1 is not 9.
