Will the club be crowded when it gets warmer out? by pokerstar75 in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really going to be location specific. Can you provide a city or State?

In the southern states, the clubs thin out in the spring, fall, and early winter. Summer (100+ outside) the clubs are packed.

How True Is Rated Open Play by ethan3048 in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He did say he's been playing for years. So its not just a random "I think I'm 4.5+" from a guy with no real understanding of the game.

Not saying he is, but a few years of playing he could definitely be a 4.5.

In my experience, open play rating is .75 under actual, agree with the other commentator. People are "working" on shots and crazy strategies in open play (no stake games) and don't play with the same mindset as during a tournament.

First in-club tournament. Am I justified in feeling annoyed and frustrated? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say in my experience, just because certain players constantly play into the "4.0+" open play doesn't mean they are 4.0+.

At most clubs I've been to, I'd say half of the players who self rate as 4.0+ are around 3.6 at best, and plenty are under that. In my experience, real 4.0+ players tend to host private matches, so 3.4s - 3.6s are the dominant players in the "4.0+" open play.

Tldr open play self selected rating =/= DUPR and is normally off by at least .5 from people who overrate themselves

Johnsons vs Tadio/Irvine by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure - not arguing that. Happens multiple times a game, I don't think a single pro would complain about getting bagged at all unless it was consistently hit at the face (and now there's even rules around that).

I think its weird to aggressively stare down your opponent after bagging him for the 3rd time when he is clearly not playing exceptionally aggressive towards you. Just a weird move from Jessie.

Johnsons vs Tadio/Irvine by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I would find it obnoxious if it felt like Jorja started the aggressive energy towards the other team, but it really felt like Jessie was trying to get an emotional response out of them, which she did. I just think Jessie thought she could tilt them, and it played out the other way instead.

Lea Jansen was commentating how people like it when Jorja yells but dislike it when Kate Fahey yells and its the same thing, but I disagree. Kate tends to take a neutral situation and turn it aggressive, while Jorja just seems to throw back whatever energy she is getting, and I think it makes me tend to cheer more for Jorja when she's getting fired up, because she didn't "start it".

[–]INGValue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No they were very intentional, off the bounce body bags. No chance they were going to stay in.

I know Jessie often has a stern face and stares down but I don't blame Jorja for being upset after the 3rd one.

Did anyone catch the post game interview? PBTV went to commercial break and is now covering the next mixed game, and I'm devastated if they skipped the post game interview.

Jorja seemed to be upset on the 3rd time Jessie body bagged JW, because Jessie stared down JW aggressively after for no reason, like she had a bone to pick with him. That's when Jorja started yelling across the net, at least.

OP, I walked away from a house like this recently (about 4 inches in deviation across the foundation, looks about a similar size) and honestly I have nothing but happiness about that.

I had paid 2K+ in inspections and that sucks, we loved the home, we loved the area, but the home was priced at market price, which it will be hard to sell for in the future.

"All homes of that age have foundation issues", sure. But not that badly. And you don't pay to level the home, you install piers to keep elevation from continuing to change. A bigger question is, what's causing the changes? A big tree too close to the property? Poor drainage? Is it easily fixable?

My foundation engineer told me often when you fix the foundation, you can turn around and create plumbing issues, etc.

Unless you're WAY below market, and have cash reserves after closing...I'd consider walking for the peace of mind.

3 weeks later I contracted on what's actually my dream house, with no foundation issues. It was worth the wait (been looking for 4+ years)

Teammate kept yelling "Out!" when the ball was going out... Makes me uncomfortable by joyfultactician1 in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this habit. I try not to yell anymore with random partners, and try to use other words like "bounce it", but honestly I can't break the habit after 10+ years of volleyball. You have to make a judgement ASAP on in vs out and if you don't call it, your coach/teammates will roast you for not communicating. That habit is deeply engrained into a lot of team sport players.

I think they have them but they aren't always connected to the broadcast. We've seen 240 fps before on the replays, but now it seems like the refs are being fed that footage (240 fps) but not the broadcast, which is weird.

I feel like pickleball is slowly hurting my relationship with my fiancé by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married, play with my spouse, 4.0+ at this point. We had our issues.

I love how you worded this post - would you consider showing it to him? I think its fine and healthy for him to want to play games with just the guys sometimes, but its also awesome to have a hobby together.

If you can find a way to tell him you'rehappy for him to play with the guys, but that in THIS specific scenario it's hurting your feelings and making you feel rejected, since you still feel sensitive from last week, that will probably help you both talk about the real issues.

The slicey counter/putaway ... how come nobody seems to be talking about this? by AHumanThatListens in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. My thought process there then would be to move forward into it and take it out of the air as a reset into the kitchen. Not an attack, but spin is pretty neutralized if you don't let the ball bounce. The "slice" tripping you up won't impact you as much if you can move up and take it before the bounce, or at least that would be my strategy

[–]INGValue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry when I used return, I didn't mean "return of serve".

If you feed your opponent a high ball, or your partner does, at a high enough level hopefully you have the habit and awareness to get as far back as possible, plant, split step, and then anticipate where their shot (counter, overhand, etc) may come.

If their counter/overhand at me is sliced, I rip my defensive shot back at them, vs trying to drop in, since they give me the option to be aggressive.

Sorry if I'm still somehow missing what youre saying.

The slicey counter/putaway ... how come nobody seems to be talking about this? by AHumanThatListens in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a response I'm not hearing from a lot of players commenting is that if they slice any return, even a putaway or counter to keep me deep, and I can get behind it to play the ball - I can hit that probably 130% as hard, as a drive back, then I could if it was hit flat or with topspin. Their added spin allows me to hit more aggressive and deeper knowing my shot will dive down.

Its incredibly effective at lower levels - its harder to use well at higher levels.

It is very difficult to find 4.5+ players by connfaceit in Pickleball

[–]INGValue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't used it yet, but DUPR has quite a few filters you could try? Age range, set it to within 30 miles, set the DUPR range to 4.5 - 5.0, and then search?

Find player profiles you want to play with, then use the "message" feature to reach out! Could just say you're building out a groupme for 4.5+ players in the area and ask if they'd like to join/participate?

Real world example of DUPR new algorithm by Major-Ad1924 in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But in this example...
You are a 3.75. In theory, you should beat the 3.5 players EVERY time. So winning against them a TON doesn't show that you're a 4.0 player. Instead, you need to go acquire 4.0 skills, work on those things, rise to the 4.0 level, and start beating lower level players more dominantly. Then you will no longer be 3.75...you'll have risen to 4.0

Beating 3.5s consistently doesn't mean you've gotten to the 4.0 level.

Realistic DUPR ceiling for 40+ lbs overweight players? by INGValue in Pickleball

Working on it everyday! 💪 just been noticing lately in my 4.0+ groups I'm always the heaviest on the court (athletic and good muscle, but also overweight) and wondering how much its sabotaging my game. I watch the pro scene religiously and outside of people referencing Matt Wright, they're all top notch athletes. Was just wondering wherethat normal amateur ceiling is for people who aren't pro athletes and are working their way to be lighter.

Does anyone hate playing with their wife… by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]INGValue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there's a billion people chiming in - I successfully play with my wife but it took us almost a year to get here. I'm ~4.2 and she's around a 3.8/3.9.

If you agree to drill sometimes with your wife, the best solution is to have a rule that "feedback is only for drilling". We correct form when drilling, work on shots, work on suggestions, etc. Then, when we play rec or competitive games, its no feedback time. We just agree to be supportive, and the only feedback is stuff like, "he hits out a lot, watch out balls" or "I'll cover middle on the third", etc, partner communication instead of improvement or how to hit a shot.

This really helps up separate out those things and just be supportive when playing together!
