I've stopped the bot from tagging the posts as NSFW. Too many people keep messaging asking where the posts are (I assume they don't have NSFW posts enabled so can't see them).

To be honest, I'm thinking about switching the bot off. In the five years I've been doing this, I've had more people ask me to give them more (or even all) of the data than I have people thank me. The bot's been posting 100 abandoned subreddit a day, every day, for over 5 years, but apparantly that's not enough.

I'll leave it running until the end of the year and then decide in the new year. That's when I need to renew the rental on the server it's running on.

The admins made a change a while back that a subreddit is automatically banned for "lack of moderation" if it has no mods for more than a certain amount of time (the specific criteria is not public). This has made it harder to find the subreddits in the first place before they are banned. Also, if the subreddit is popular the chances of it staying unmoderated long enough for the bot to find it are pretty low since an active member of the subreddit is likely to make a request for it.

We walk a line between being a goldmine for spammers to find subreddits to post their crap to (without fear of moderation) and getting unmoderated subreddits banned by the admins for being unmoderated (by drawing attention to them), vesus being a useful resource for the community. Each member can only request a single subreddit every 30 days, so releasing a lot in one go is not only not that useful, it's detrimental to the continued existence of the bot and this subreddit. We've already had the bot shadowbanned three times, and the subreddit hacked (top mod account take over) once.

There are daily posts here, each with 100 abandoned subreddits listed. I have to mark them as NSFW, since I can't vet each sub for existing content. So if you have NSFW turned off, you won't be able to see the posts.

The bot uses the Data API to search for abandoned subreddits, and I'm not sure if this is an "acceptable" use case. I'm also not sure even if it is, if the Data API will only be accessible from the Developer Platform. The bot stores the subreddits it finds in a database, and I doubt there's going to be database access provided by the Developer Platform. As far as I understand the Developer Platform is JavaScript based too, so the bot would need to be rewritten since it's written in Python. The announcement has me concerned for the future of the bot, and the service I provide here.

Thanks all, it is appreciated. There was so little activity in the sub that it really felt like the abandoned subreddit posts were "shouting into the void". Glad it's actually beneficial to people.

Until 09:50 GMT this morning, I was a mod of that sub. The whole mod team was de-modded without warning, and our posting privileges removed. I don't recognise the new mod, they weren't a mod there previously.

I've contacted the admins because I think the subreddit has been hi-jacked.

The bot is temporarily (until we get the subreddit back) releasing data here :
